It’s our stunning online magazine that we created after the 2012 AfrikaBurn… a journal into the Karoo that gives visual and written insight into AfrikaBurn.

No picture could ever capture the essence of the magic and mystery that takes place in Tankwa Town, Karoo… But, a 300-page high-quality online magazine – packed with photos, articles and poems – can sure go a long way. No More Vagina? Qatar Releases Designs for 2nd World Cup Stadium 2022

With the world glued to the screen for 2014 Soccer World Cup, the timing is spot-on for Qatar to release designs for the second 2022 World Cup Stadium. Called Al Bayt Stadium, the stadium comes after the first proposal by Zaha Hadid Architects for the Al Wakrah Stadium — which quickly earned the title of ‘The Vagina Stadium’. The Al Bayt Stadium is said to reflect Qatar’s proud cultural heritage and is based on the Bayt Al Sha’ar, a black and white tent used traditionally by local nomadic people.

Japan’s 18-Meter High Inflatable Concert Hall

The areas still recovering from the 2011 Japanese tsunami will play host to the Ark Nova in November when the Swiss Lucerne Festival launches a 3-week musical tour. Designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and British sculptor Anish Kapoor in 2011, Ark Nova is an 18-meter high PVC-coated polyester inflatable concert hall that seats up to 500 guests.

The real-life M.C. Escher’s never ending staircase

Dutch artist M.C. Escher’s famous impossible stairs — which cross infinitely — has now been reconstructed in real life by architecture firm dRMM on the grounds of London’s Tate Modern. Forming part of the London Design Festival – that took place in September 2013 – the art installation combines 15 wooden stairways and is perfectly designed to bewilder visitors.

Encasing a Cloud

Japanese studio Tetsuo Kondo Architects teamed up with environmental engineering firm Transsolar to encase a cloud inside this transparent two-storey cube. Tetsuo Kondo and Transsolar previously collaborated to produce an indoor cloud at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2010 and this second Cloudscapes installation recreated the experience in the sunken courtyard of theMuseum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT). Cloudscapes is, in effect, an experiment in creating a new type of architectural space, one that achieves integration in engagement with its environment.

In Karlsruhe, Germany, the kids who attend Kindergarten Wolfartsweier must contend with the serious business of walking straight into the mouth of a cat everyday. Artist Tomi Ungerer and architect d’Ayla-Suzan Yöndel are behind the brilliant kindergarten building design of a kitty in a sphinx-like pose.

50 000 Cans of Beer on the Wall…

Well, not quite on the wall, but rather an entire house! Let’s rewind a bit. In 1968, the late John Milkovisch started using the old beer cans he saved from his afternoon drinking sessions with his wife to make the shiny metallic exterior of the Beer Can House located in Houston, Texas. He ended up using 50,000 beer cans. Cheers to that!

Neon Rainbow Underground

In downtown Birmingham, Alabama, an otherwise drab underpass at 18th street is equipped with thousands of LEDs that sees it light up like a rainbow every night. Artist Bill FitzGibbons is behind this fab work funded by the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham’s Community Catalyst Fund in partnership with REV Birmingham.

For her fourth collection presented in Paris as a guest member of the Chambre syndicale de la Haute Couture, Iris van Herpen explores the electricity of the body in her ostentatious Voltage Haute Couture Collection.

Experimenting with its use in the field of creation, this collection seeks to portray its tangible movement and power.

This ability of light and electricity to change states and bodies is reproduced using the most innovative technologies. Described as an alchemist approach to fashion, Van Herpen’s designs perpetually embrace new collaborations with artists, architects and researchers. As part of the show she collaborated with new Zealand artist Carlos Van Camp, echoing his notion of controlling high voltage electricity and its interaction with the human body.

Iris Van Herpen’s Voltage Haute Couture Collection

Van Herpen shares Canadian architect Philip Beesley’s fascination with materials and structures.

They focus specifically on how the reaction of chemistry and electricity causes structures to respond to their environment and react as living beings.

Iris van Herpen is also know for being today’s leading fashion designer in the use of 3D printing. Drawing on the idea of movement, the flexible 3D printed dresses are a revolution, a result of collaborations with Neri Oxman of the MIT Media Lab as well as Keren Oxman and Prof. Craig Carter of MIT with Stratasys, and architect Julia Koerner with Materialise.

NIGHTVISION: A Celebration of European Architecture

Nightvision is a celebration of the brilliance and diversity of architecture found across Europe. Over the course of three months Luke Shepard journeyed with a friend through 36 cities in 21 countries with the ambition of capturing some of the greatest European structures in a new and unique way. Comprised of thousands of carefully taken photographs, strung together and stabilized in post-production, Nightvision aims to inspire appreciation for these man-made landmarks.(03:37)

We Do Phoshop

On June 26, a Korean language Facebook page called ‘We Do Phoshop‘ appeared online. The site solicited Photoshop requests, and the ensuing shops weren’t exactly what clients had in mind. Or what anyone had in mind, for that matter. We all agree that these Koreans are making the internet a better place. Here are a few examples of some requests made and the results:
