Patterns, texture, and superior quality fabrics. Hendrik Vermeulen Couture forms part of our ‘Best Of’ Ten Years one small seed, in partnership with PUMA. Issue 19’s fashion spread, entitled “Project Aiko: Rise of the Machines”, shows an exquisite collection by the local haute-couture fashion designer.

With one small seed editor-in-chief Giuseppe Russo as art director and photographer Stephen Greeff working his magic behind the lens, models were transformed into robotic femmes fatales in a plot of high drama and thrill.

Part of our ‘Best Of’ Ten Years one small seed Issue, in partnership with PUMA, is the Urban Eniquity fashion spread (Issue 22). We commissioned German photographer Guido Schwarz to shoot an industrial grime-inspired fashion story… Girls, Guys, Grease, this was no ordinary garage set.

Conceptually, it would feature an underground hedonistic den of iniquity that would symbolise the darker side of urban living. Behind the scenes were oiled-up models and lacquered lips as a storm brewed overhead and a caged Rottweiler threatened to break loose into the grungy mechanic’s workshop.

The South Beach Fashion Shoot from Issue 17 brings heat to our ‘Best Of’ Ten Years one small seed, in partnership with PUMA. It isn’t often one is able to have such a renowned model, Bryce Thompson, on set. And a big-ups to all (on and off set) that were there for doing a stellar job and surviving what must have been one of the hottest days in Cape Town! Editor-in-chief Giuseppe Russo remembers a towel had even melted into the tar. Summertime ingredients for one bitchin’ shoot.

The best of our 10 years in independent publishing has been curated in this epic edition… Welcome to one small seed magazine / issue 29 / digital 04. Going through the pages of 25 print magazines and our three digital issues to select the content has left us smiling, laughing, lingering and certainly remembering–and we have no doubt it’ll do the same for you!

Making use of our digital magazine features, we have been able to breathe new life to previous print content – and everything has truly come together, just how we always envisioned! Please take your time to go through this magazine (all at once or a little bit each day) as a lot of work went into producing every edition and every page, since we first launched in 2005. This issue is a superlative balance of content, comprising of traditional and contemporary art, photography, fashion editorials, exclusive interviews, videos, feature articles, music, and the best of one small seed TV.

RECIPE:
45ml Absolut Vodka
20ml dry vermouth

Shake ABSOLUT vodka and vermouth together with several ice cubes in a shaker. Strain into cocktail glass, garnish with an olive and serve.

RECIPE:
3 fresh mint sprigs
2 tsp sugar
3 tbsp fresh lime juice
45ml HABANA CLUB light rum
club soda

In a tall thin glass, crush part of the mint with a fork to coat the inside. Add the sugar and lime juice and stir thoroughly. Top with ice. Add rum and mix. Top off with chilled club soda (or seltzer). Add a lime slice and the remaining mint, and serve.

RECIPE:
45ml Jameson whiskey
1/2 tsp vermouth
1/2 tsp triple sec
1/2 tsp anis liqueur
1 twist orange peel
1 twist lemon peel
Shake Jameson, vermouth, triple sec, and anis with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Add the twists of orange and lemon peel and serve.

RECIPE:
45ml ABSOLUT Vodka
90ml tomato juice
dash of lemon juice
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 – 3 drops Tabasco sauce
1 lime wedge
Shake all ingredients (except lime wedge) with ice and strain into an old-fashioned glass over ice cubes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add the wedge of lime and serve.

45ml OLMECA Tequila
15ml premium triple sec
30ml lime juice
Coat the rim of a cocktail glass with lime juice, and dip in salt. Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into the glass, and serve.

15ml cherry brandy
45ml JAMESON whiskey
1tsp lemon juice
dash of grenadine
sugar syrup to taste

An ARTsouthAFRICA initiative, THAT Art Fair is the freshest new art event to hit the Cape Town creative scene! So, if you’re in the Mother City this weekend (27th Feb – 03 March), then make sure you join the rest of Cape Town in celebrating #FreshArtFromAfrica with THAT Art Fair! Read on to find out more details and what to expect!

THAT Art Fair is ‘a platform for African artists who work under the radar of the traditional art establishment – who do things a little differently’

THAT Art Fair is far from any type of static art event, and this year there’s been a dedicated live art programme included to create subtle playful interventions within the urban venue. Incorporating the work of some of South Africa’s most talented performance artists, Francois Knoetze will be showcasing #networking, an enactment using his most recently completed ‘wearable sculpture’ suit.

SKATTIE artists – Angelo Valerio and Jana Babez Terblanche – will both be performing and The Fish Collective will be bringing two travelling goldfish by train from Johannesburg to THAT Art Fair, presenting their documented journey in the form of postcards, souvenirs and the fish themselves as the final product. There will also be live graffiti art by Kilmany Jo Liversage and Martin Lund.

THAT ART PARTY at THAT Art Fair

THAT ART PARTY is the official celebration for THAT Art Fair, the newest addition to Cape Town’s creative calendar. Beats come to life on Friday the 27th February from 17:00. and it all goes down on the second floor of the parkade at 121 Cecil Rd, Salt River. THAT ART PARTY line-up features The Brother Moves On, a DJ set by Spoek Mathambo, Thor Rixon, Champions of the Sonarverse and SKATTIE DJ’s Athi Patra-Ruga, Jana Babez and Mr Blouse. THAT ART PARTY also presents the Cape Town premiere of the internationally acclaimed documentary film, Shield and Spear and a performance piece by Cape Town-based artist Angelo Valerio, titled Ascension.

Cocaine-Snorting Oscar Statuette placed on Hollywood Blvd.

Los Angeles-based street artist – Plastic Jesus – often crosses lines with his controversial art, where is known for using satire, criticism and humour to engage and make accessible various political, urban and socio-economic issues. And lines it was, when on Thursday, 19 February 2015, the artist placed a life-sized cocaine-snorting Oscar statuette on LA’s Hollywood Boulevard. A pre-party laid to rest, the statue’s location and arrival time was no co-incidence – it was placed at La Brea Avenue, at the edge the street which was closed prior to The 2015 Oscars | 87th Academy Awards that took place on Sunday, 22 February ’15

Nick Stern, a photographer who works with the artist, tells us that the statue is also a commentary on Hollywood culture. He speaks on behalf of Plastic Jesus:

The piece is intended to draw attention to Hollywood’s hidden problem of drug addiction that effects hundreds of people in the showbiz industry and is largely ignored until the death of a high profile A-list celebrity. (Stern)

He publicizes the picture of an in-and-out life in excess and gross gratification… hedonism and narcissism. Nonetheless, we’re all pawns to the system – (k)nobs that keep the capitalist wheel rolling – be it waiting out a regular late-night corner shift; or for that bond to be approved; 5pm to arrive; Better Days; a quick fix; freedom, bought; or for someone to talk to you while you sit making the Big Decisions. Ultimately, Plastic Jesus creates art that is ubiquitous – and he’s got bravado. Boundaries overstepped, perhaps. But, that happens every day, in mediums or journals that the public cannot get hold of or are not accessible and thus we don’t look for them. The Financial Times, The Economist – they might come across as elitist – and there are articles which indeed are. Oh, yeah, you also have to pay for them – unlike this piece of public art that pulls the middle finger at Capitalism.
