Filled with videos, photography, art and words that transports you to a place of visual awe, this issue features creativity from across the globe. Reality is often rooted in what you experience, not in the material you touch. It’s perceived subjectively, and has many interpretations. As you’ll find from the artists we feature in this issue.

Urban artist SOAP believes that ‘science demonstrates that visual proof is the weakest proof. What we see, feel and touch is not real at all.’ Photographer Sam Norval thinks of ‘something truly real and honest,’ he suggests that ‘we almost don’t believe it to be true or honest. We tend to look for the deception and untruths more than just accepting the reality presented in front of us.’

Jee Young Lee creates an otherworldly dreamscape with props that you can touch, Oliver Barnett photographs matter in nature to achieve an abstract image and New York photographer Rebecca Handler challenges popular history and myth by contrasting it with our modern-day reality.

Art, photography, science… Paper, canvas, computer screens… Realism, surrealism, hyperrealism. They’re all symbols with meaning attached to them, and it’s your call to use them to make sense of the world. No matter what you choose, we’ll agree on one thing: subjectivity is and always will be real.

We Love Sexy will explore the portraits, the movements and the moments of a diverse, inspiring group of individuals. From the professional to the amateur photographer, from the model to the make-up artist, and from the people we call friends and brothers… everyone is a part of We Love Sexy, whether it be directly or indirectly. We Love Sexy showcases ‘sexy’ photography in all its forms: from the curve of a calf to an honest smile, from the glamour of haute couture to infectious free-spirited fun, and from the urban underground to the latest runway show.

There are three ways to share your own interpretation of ‘sexy':

1) Become a member (if you aren’t already!) on onesmallseed.net and upload your image making sure you use the hash tag #welovesexy in the ‘Tags’ box (see image below). Globally, a TVC and various retail point of sale elements, feature fashion’s wild child Jeremy Scott, Nicki Minaj, hip-hop artist Big Sean, Korean pop artist 2NE1 and NBA player, Derrick Rose.

On the home front, adidas Originals South Africa has developed a series of four locally produced videos, behind the scenes footage and images featuring local celebrities DJ Switch, beat boxer George Avakian, the adidas skateboarding team, B-boys (break-dancers) Vouks, The Curse and video game reviewer, Pippa Tshabalala.

Each video remains true to the ethos of the campaign – to represent originality, creativity and passion – whilst also highlighting a cross-section of local celebrities from different genres and sub-cultures.

Jess talks of music being a form of art, and art being the most beautiful way to bring people together. After studying Critical Theory Social Justice at Occidental College Jess had the realization that is was all insane and decided to get out. She then moved to Howard University for one year and then UCT for one semester, after finishing off her last semester at Occidental, she graduated and now has moved back to Cape Town to live her dreams…

Jess bought to South Africa a hidden treasure that she found at the bottom of an old house in an old crack district; five crates of some of the most amazing records she had ever seen. Obsessed with the history and the cover art of the records, she began to put them all over her walls.

…and that was my first serious collection that was handed down to me and I was already curating and collecting and I did not even know it. It was like putting art up on your walls, that was where the love of this all really started.

She found a common thread in both the art and the music, spending hours at a time in the record stores; digging through the records as if it was a form of therapy. As a natural result she started Vinyl DIGZ, which gave her the chance to explore her talents as vinyl DJ, whilst also exhibiting her prints at a studio party which her an Pierre Estienne held locally in Cape Town. This gave the crowd the chance to appreciate something from an era past – both aesthetically and musically.

“Its pretty dope seeing like my artwork all around town now.

Jessica believes that the art movement is a beautiful catalyst for change and dedicates her life to it. She started a non-profit organization called Soul City Movement. Its inception came from her fascination by the streets and the people in them and so grew her desire to get closer and connect to those people and places, and at the same time introduce art.

Released on 21st of May 2012 on their new UK label, Cooking Vinyl, the album’s 10 tracks reveal the band at its rawest and most visceral, encapsulating cinematic visions and themes of love, revolt, and redemption. The track ‘Lucifer’ is available as a free download through the band’s website www.thecult.us, while details are being confirmed for a worldwide tour and will be announced soon.

Choice of Weapon is the follow up to the critically-acclaimed 2007 release Born Into This, which UK magazine, Mojo, called ‘a wholehearted, utopian and irrefutably exciting record.’ Long-time Cult collaborator and producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Bush) – who produced one of The Cult’s most successful albums, the platinum-certified Sonic Temple, put the finishing touches on the foundations that were laid by co-producer Chris Goss (Queens of the Stone Age, U.N.K.L.E., Masters of Reality).

The album was written by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy and recorded in New York City, Los Angeles; the California high desert and the band’s Witch Mountain studios in the Hollywood Hills, between July and December 2011. The new release features founding members Astbury on vocals and Duffy on guitars, with drummer John Tempesta and bassist Chris Wyse.

We have had the opportunity to work with two of the most influential and talented producers in the world today. They pushed us beyond our comfort zone, and helped us craft Choice of Weapon. (Astbury)

The album is aimed at the heart of The Cult’s loyal following. It reflects the current discontent and destruction of our eco systems, the search for individual meaning against a tide of rampant materialism, narcissism and disconnected lives.

We went deeper . . . we worked a bit harder on this record. We have great fans and they deserve our best, and I feel this is one of our best records, maybe the best. (Duffy)

 

The album is released as a special edition fan pack on May the 14th, followed by digital and double vinyl on May the 21st, with the CD and deluxe CD’s on June the 4th.

The human story is told in the language of pop culture. Coca Cola designed Santa Claus and Hugo Boss the uniforms for the Order of the Death’s Head. Jimi played The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock and the Devil went down to Georgia. David Byrne wore a big suit and Princess Leia that bikini. We couldn’t handle the truth, needed a bigger boat and loved the smell of napalm in the morning. Assorted male models shot JFK, RFK and JR, then Biggy Smalls, Tupac and the Sheriff. And something made Andy Warhol’s Marilyns smile. Maybe it was the hand up the Mona Lisa’s skirt. (Gustav Swart)

This issue’s theme of ‘Listen to my Colour and Look at my Sound’ led us to some odd doors as we sought artists that bridged the divide between the visual and the aural.  An interview with legendary album artist Storm Thorgerson – referred to some as the 6^th member of Pink Floyd – allowed us to revisit the aesthetics of the ’70s, while 21^st Century poster designer Dan Khulken tells us about making posters for bands like Black Keys and The National. Issue 24 is a 30 000-plus words visual explosion, and one such visually exploding artist we spoke to is the infamous Gonzo illustrator and Hunter S Thompson’s partner-in-grime, Ralph Steadman. Another artist that tore through the ’70s and still doing what he does best is Horace Panter – the bass player of The Specials. In this issue, Panter gives us a candid account of his life in music and his life as an artist, from playing with The Clash to his time working as a white van man, he shares memories of his life on a road less traveled.

Our fashion spread this issue comes direct from Tokyo, Japan. Creating a 3D-like effect, reminiscent of Nintendo games and early Star Wars films, Japanese designer Kunihiko Morinaga created his Low Resolution collection around the 8-bit inspired colorful square blocks. Mari Sarai’s lewd black and white nudes feature as this issue’s photography section, her subjects including celebs like Gavin Rossdale’s daughter Daisy Lowe and model Janice Dickinson. We have a feast for the ears in the form of interviews with Kenya’s globe conquering Just a Band and the revolutionary American poet Abiodun Oyewole – the man who robbed the KKK and worked with legendary Jazz musician Gil Scott-Heron on his famous song ‘The Revolution will not be Televised’.

Ever tasted the letter ‘f’? Or smelled the colour blue? Well, some people have! One of our main features this issue is on Synesthesia – the condition that lets people see sound as colour – and trace its path through the methods and madness of some of the brightest stars in the human firmament. Click HERE for a preview of the feature. On the local frontier, we sit down with singer/song writer/actress Sannie Fox, electronic trio Digital Rockit and all four members from Cape Town band iScreamStix. Olmeca Editión Black Tequila joins us in showcasing electronic DJs/Producers, with this issue bringing Blush n Bass and Felix Laband to the party.  We watched architecture dance slowly to visible music in our architecture feature, looking at structures like The Sum of Days, NY; Stillspotting, NY; the Jewish Museum, Berlin; Jetty Square and more.

Ending with the beginning, our cover for Issue 24 is devoted to one of the street artist/videographer Mr Brainwash’s tongue-in-cheek creations. This issue features a six-page interview with the artist, who talked to us from his L.A. home about money, art and Andy Warhol. Showcasing at 34FineArt Gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town is an exclusive selection of Mr Brainwash’s latest artwork, including issue 24’s ‘Madonna’ silk screen on paper with spray paint.

Controversial as she may have been, the world mourns Amy Winehouse who passed away at the ominous age of 27.

Although plagued by addiction and the pressures of overexposure, Amy Winehouse will be remembered for her mastering of many eclectic musical styles and a powerful contralto voice. She passed away on the 23rd of July at her London apartment and the investigation into her death is ongoing currently classified “unexplained.” She joins other musical greats who passed away at the grim age of 27; the likes of Jim Morrison, Kurt Corbain, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

Friends, the likes of Russell Brand, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Kelly Osbourne, and Pete Wentz, have reached out to express their sadness at the news of her passing, Brand writing a beautiful ode to her on his website (it can be found here). After her initial explosion of success, including Grammy wins and platinum albums, Amy Winehouse found herself skewered by the media on any and all public displays of an ill-nature. In the end she became that tragic figure the papers made her out to be, but in time her legacy will be remembered for her soul-lifting Jazz greats and amazing stage presence. The 27 Club, as morose as it is to say, has good company in Amy Winehouse.

Picture This has 12 digital magazine editions to date, each comprising over 100 pages of breathtaking photography created by one small seed network members. Picture This published its first print edition in late 2010. Now, in March 2011, we have launched the first free downloadable app. And in just its first four days online, it has had a massive 4500 downloads.
