Published by one small seed in 2009, Picture This Magazine has since released 13 stunning issues and one limited print edition, with all images sourced directly from the members of one small seed network (est. 2008) – which currently has over 61 000 images. Since we launched Picture This, there has been incremental changes in photography – with growth in technology, the ever-evolving social media and the human factor involved.

It comes down to now being able sharing your special moment. Straight away. Allowing you to do this has been one of the pioneering factors in the our re-launch of Picture This and also why we took a bit of a break to create a new photographic blueprint. With a stunning new website that has all issues uploaded (including the new #13), the freshly designed Picture This is ideal for iOS and Android and now anyone with a smartphone can upload their best image. After AfrikaBurn 2012 we asked our readers to submit their festival snaps via our creative network onesmallseed.net and compiled them in a magazine so burners could share their unforgettable moments with other burners, burners-to-be and everybody who’s interested in the movement.

South Africa’s not the easiest place to live. The stark contrast between rich and poor generates a constant tension that buzzes uncomfortably in all neighbourhoods and among all people. It’s led to the point where some of us have become jaded to the polystyrene cups being shaken at our car window in anticipation of spare change. In fact, many individuals have adopted a fend-for-yourself, dog-eat-dog attitude, offering nothing in the belief that giving money directly into the hands of the homeless only reinforces the cycle of poverty. Others reach out to charity groups and NGOs to make donations through third parties, hoping it goes to people in need. So is there some sort of space for the people who fall into the middle ground – people wanting to help but needing to ensure the aid is structured and smart?

Enter The Street Store. This pop-up is made up of posters on the sidewalk, and runs entirely on donations. Anybody wanting to make contributions can literally hang their clothes through a gap in the provided poster, and drop their shoes onto specially designed flat boxes. It’s an easy-to-set up system that works well. From there, the homeless are invited to browse, get assistance from The Street Store volunteers on outfit choices and hey presto, you have yourself a genuine philanthropic exchange that directly helps your local community.

Of course, poverty and homelessness is not specific to Cape Town – it is a worldwide issue. This is why The Street Store is an open-source initiative, meaning anyone, from any city around the world can host a pop-up charity store. The idea is certainly needed. At the last pop-up space, Pazak and Levitan explained that they had attached their ‘Open’ and ‘Hang Up’ posters out just the day before, only to arrive on the morning of The Street Store day to see that they were all gone. Why? The homeless use cardboard to sleep on.

Jess talks of music being a form of art, and art being the most beautiful way to bring people together. After studying Critical Theory Social Justice at Occidental College Jess had the realization that is was all insane and decided to get out. She then moved to Howard University for one year and then UCT for one semester, after finishing off her last semester at Occidental, she graduated and now has moved back to Cape Town to live her dreams…

Jess bought to South Africa a hidden treasure that she found at the bottom of an old house in an old crack district; five crates of some of the most amazing records she had ever seen. Obsessed with the history and the cover art of the records, she began to put them all over her walls.

…and that was my first serious collection that was handed down to me and I was already curating and collecting and I did not even know it. It was like putting art up on your walls, that was where the love of this all really started.

She found a common thread in both the art and the music, spending hours at a time in the record stores; digging through the records as if it was a form of therapy. As a natural result she started Vinyl DIGZ, which gave her the chance to explore her talents as vinyl DJ, whilst also exhibiting her prints at a studio party which her an Pierre Estienne held locally in Cape Town. This gave the crowd the chance to appreciate something from an era past – both aesthetically and musically.

Jessica believes that the art movement is a beautiful catalyst for change and dedicates her life to it. She started a non-profit organization called Soul City Movement. Its inception came from her fascination by the streets and the people in them and so grew her desire to get closer and connect to those people and places, and at the same time introduce art.
