Diddo Velema’s “The Cure for Greed”

In a society where gross consumption and instant gratification is an everyday reality, we perhaps should be using ‘The Cure for Greed‘ by Amsterdam-based artist-designer-inventor Diddo Velema. What is his cure? Well, simply put: an injection of five ml crimp-sealed serum vial containing one dose of stabilized pure dollar ink mechanically and chemically recovered from approximately $10,000 in US currency. Each personally monogrammed custom-made mahogany or walnut box contains:
•	One 24-karat gold plated syringe.

•	One five ml crimp-sealed serum vial containing one dose of stabilized pure dollar ink mechanically  and chemically recovered from approximately $10,000 in US currency.

Edmark shares a bit about the project:
‘The rotation speed is synchronized to the strobe so that one flash occurs every time the sculpture turns 137.5º—the golden angle. The placement of the appendages is determined by the same method nature uses in pinecones and sunflowers and if you count the number of spirals on any of these sculptures you will find that they are always Fibonacci numbers.’

Behind The CGI Scenes: Here’s What It Really Looks Like

Companies such as Rhythm and Hues — who worked on Life of Pie for example — spend thousands of dollars on equipment and technology. A single piece of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) equipment can cost as much as $5000, while studios such as Grumo Media would charge you $3000 to $10 000 to render just one minute of their product. And all just to make you believe that what you’re seeing is real. Here’s a before-and-after look at what it really looks like ‘behind the scenes’!
The life of Pi
There have been countless movies that have been made using CGI, but how will it affect the film industry in the future? Well, one of the most significant will be actors’ approach to a scene. Godzilla star Elizabeth Olsen, for example, said in an interview with Screen Rant, ‘The main difference is that in Godzilla you’re reacting to something that isn’t there, and in something like Avengers, you’re approaching and almost interacting with something that’s not there’.
Or maybe soon movie producers will simply use A-list stars and B-listers will lose their jobs to computers. Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie would only have to interact and engage with greenscreens and inanimate objects fitted with motion sensing nodes or – god forbid – the attractive physique of popular actors could become redundant completely. 
According to New York Daily News the late Fast and Furious star Paul Walker will be rendered using CGI. ‘They have hired four actors with bodies very similar to Paul’s physique and they will be used for movement and as a base.’ Might it then not be possible to replace Leonardo DiCaprio or Angelina Jolie with more accessible labour?
It seems my mom was wrong for telling me I should stop having imaginary friends. Nice one mom.

Social Media: A (Face)book of lies

Whether it’s via a computer, tablet or smart phone – we’ve all gone face-to-face with Facebook. Sometimes for hours at end… and often for no particular reason at all. We’ve scrolled past the status of that guy posting pictures of his fancy car and his great life.  We’ve all gone through our ex’s profile and felt some bitter regret after seeing all the ‘fun’ her Instagram photos tell us she’s having.  Then you post some comment about the wonder of life… after which you keep refreshing for any incoming Likes.

This is how social media has affected our lives. Everyone does it, and so do we. It’s all heightened reality. Yeah, the guy might have a new car that is fancy – but he doesn’t share how he had to work 12 hours a day in a shitty job to get it, and during that process he lost his girlfriend because he was never home. We are trying to live up to ideals that are not realistic. That exist only because of a status update or an image with no context. 
It’s become a social norm to send ‘LOLs’ without physically laughing, or smiley faces without being happy. It’s a façade that we indulge in because it’s human that we want to be liked… to be noticed and accepted. Showcasing ourselves – or our lifestyles – as something they’re not makes us feel like we fit in… But is this a bad thing? Who knows. Spending so much time and energy ‘living’ as someone you could not be confident being in ‘reality’, dreaming bigger dreams, or just feeling a sense of confidence… Well, this might at some point cultivate into reality! If it does, well good for you. Just do not say ‘LOL’ to someone. Ever!

Full Turn

For this project, Benjamin Muzzin from ECAL wanted to explore the notion of the third dimension, with the desire to try to get out of the usual frame of a flat screen. (Length:01:28)

Muzzin’s work in Full Turn mainly consisted in exploring and experimenting a different device for displaying images, trying to give animations volume in space. The resulting machine works with the rotation of two screens placed back to back, creating a three-dimensional animated sequence that can be seen at 360 degrees. Due to the persistence of vision, the shapes that appear on the screen turn into kinetic light sculptures.

Budapest Art Factory (BAF) is pleased to present to you SYN-Phon; sound performance based on graphical notation by Candaş Şişman featuring Barabás Lőrinc and Ölveti Mátyás. Candaş Şişman resided at BAF for the month of June as part of its cross-cultural fertilization residency program. (Length:10:57)

Coming about to understand the human nature of comprehending linguistics is that of a complex take–on. The constituent elements of language, in general content, bring forward the theory of other minds sharing, with intentioned communication. Thought varies with the use and absence of language that comes to be found in line with the development of thinking and impulses from our daily surrounding. Eventually language creates our point of view just as much as our ideas and perception of matters, individualistically.
Art plays a crucial role in demolishing the boarders of our comprehension our mindset is framed into by literate language. Human language serves as a rather conservative form of communication when comparison to musical language; where the freedom of space employs as a resort for that broad horizon of that, that in search of cutting-edge form of broadcast.
Candas’s trials of combing various forms don’t necessarily imply the mere creation of a pioneering flash but rather the use of the endless possibilities in associating the known and unknown. Through the unknown, we come about with a new way of thinking that tries to substitute and make space for a new tool of self-expression. Conclusively the graphical notation gives liberate opportunity in creating one’s personal language that holds its basis on feeling the visual and sound in parallel.



Phonation, in accordance to Candas is the presence of sound language in SYN-Phon where the structure is supported by the synthesis itself. Music in its myriad forms extends to exploiting a communicative human language, thereby making the conceptual idea much more of significant importance than the actual tool. For Candas the presence of music in positively charged negatives spaces is a key element for substitution of the unknown seeking to be expressed. By the happening of SYN-Phon the line of musician will be crossed into a rather freely inflicted composer. Lőrinc and Mátyás as the musical inputs , on trumpet and cello respectively, of the performance will attain free expression rightfully to the impulses in line of creating a new language.
SYN-Phon sound performance will demonstrate an articulation based on Candas’s intimate collective findings of Budapest during the month of June. Buda and Pest in the separate geographical allocation hold different quintessence natures, in addition to the anecdote of recent flooding events of Duna the performance is meant to reach out to the audience as a sensual expressive language. The sound performance will include sounds, constructed and picked up in Budapest recorded by Candas himself. The whole bulk graphical notation will be available in print form to be part of the introductory assimilation.
