Finally
2010 has drawn around and the country is already
abuzz with soccer fever. The Soccer World Cup
will draw a plethora of fans, sponsors, merchandise
and knock-off products to our shores in the
upcoming weeks. This set us thinking about all
things fake, and all things original. We debated
issues like: Could you be the first to do something,
and yet be entirely unoriginal? Or the last
to do it but the most original? The topic was
so abundant that we decided to explore it as
the focus for issue 18 of one
small seed. And so, ‘The Original
Fake’ issue was born.
Beyond the realms of authentic vs. knockoffs,
the term ‘fake’ encompasses a much
broader range of subject matter. Many people
nowadays think everything has been done before
and all that’s left are copies, fakes
or derivatives. Issue 18, The Original
Fake Issue, follows the success of
issue 17’s innovative inside section by
creating another magazine inside a magazine
to fully exemplify our current theme. Our content
revolves around things that are original or
fake, originally fake, original and fake, and
so on. In our inside section — our ‘fake
one small seed magazine’ —
every article has been treated to an original
design to fit its content, making each feature
an exquisite original fake in its own right.
Our
cover photograph this edition was shot by Sean
Metelerkamp, Cape Town’s hottest
new visual mastermind. The magazine also includes
an insightful feature on the man himself and
his creative process, accompanied by a spread
of Sean’s original photographic gems.
Other highlights in these glossy pages include
new artwork by international pop culture royalty
Pierre et Gilles, a peek inside
the fashion powerhouse A Bathing Ape, an exploration
of the architectural innovation of FAT
Architects, a look at the hot new Joburg
reality TV show Cream Cartel,
and at the design company behind MK Bruce Lee,
The President.
On
the music side we delve into the great industry
debate behind music piracy,
we corner gangsta rapper Jack Parow,
and we discover the history behind independent
record label African Dope Records,
before sitting down with punk rocker frontman
of Half Price, and UK glam
rock act Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
Another
feature not to be missed is the showcase of
our winners of the one small seed Network
Awards 2009, all of whom have been
given several pages to showcase their phenomenal
creative work.
