Patterns, texture, and superior quality fabrics. Hendrik Vermeulen Couture forms part of our ‘Best Of’ Ten Years one small seed, in partnership with PUMA. Issue 19’s fashion spread, entitled “Project Aiko: Rise of the Machines”, shows an exquisite collection by the local haute-couture fashion designer.

With one small seed editor-in-chief Giuseppe Russo as art director and photographer Stephen Greeff working his magic behind the lens, models were transformed into robotic femmes fatales in a plot of high drama and thrill.

That day in the garage… it got greasy

Part of our ‘Best Of’ Ten Years one small seed Issue, in partnership with PUMA, is the Urban Eniquity fashion spread (Issue 22). We commissioned German photographer Guido Schwarz to shoot an industrial grime-inspired fashion story… Girls, Guys, Grease, this was no ordinary garage set.

Conceptually, it would feature an underground hedonistic den of iniquity that would symbolise the darker side of urban living. Behind the scenes were oiled-up models and lacquered lips as a storm brewed overhead and a caged Rottweiler threatened to break loose into the grungy mechanic’s workshop.

The best of our 10 years in independent publishing has been curated in this epic edition… Welcome to one small seed magazine / issue 29 / digital 04. Going through the pages of 25 print magazines and our three digital issues to select the content has left us smiling, laughing, lingering and certainly remembering–and we have no doubt it’ll do the same for you!

Making use of our digital magazine features, we have been able to breathe new life to previous print content – and everything has truly come together, just how we always envisioned! Please take your time to go through this magazine (all at once or a little bit each day) as a lot of work went into producing every edition and every page, since we first launched in 2005. This issue is a superlative balance of content, comprising of traditional and contemporary art, photography, fashion editorials, exclusive interviews, videos, feature articles, music, and the best of one small seed TV.

Each of them is depicted in a cinematic scene, contrasting the lifestyle they are famed for having. The curtain has been dropped as Handler reveals the very probable situations these couples would face today.

Behind The CGI Scenes: Here’s What It Really Looks Like

Companies such as Rhythm and Hues — who worked on Life of Pie for example — spend thousands of dollars on equipment and technology. A single piece of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) equipment can cost as much as $5000, while studios such as Grumo Media would charge you $3000 to $10 000 to render just one minute of their product. And all just to make you believe that what you’re seeing is real. Here’s a before-and-after look at what it really looks like ‘behind the scenes’!

The life of Pi

There have been countless movies that have been made using CGI, but how will it affect the film industry in the future? Well, one of the most significant will be actors’ approach to a scene. Godzilla star Elizabeth Olsen, for example, said in an interview with Screen Rant, ‘The main difference is that in Godzilla you’re reacting to something that isn’t there, and in something like Avengers, you’re approaching and almost interacting with something that’s not there’.

Or maybe soon movie producers will simply use A-list stars and B-listers will lose their jobs to computers. Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie would only have to interact and engage with greenscreens and inanimate objects fitted with motion sensing nodes or – god forbid – the attractive physique of popular actors could become redundant completely.

According to New York Daily News the late Fast and Furious star Paul Walker will be rendered using CGI. ‘They have hired four actors with bodies very similar to Paul’s physique and they will be used for movement and as a base.’ Might it then not be possible to replace Leonardo DiCaprio or Angelina Jolie with more accessible labour?

It seems my mom was wrong for telling me I should stop having imaginary friends. Nice one mom.

Puma Fashion Shoot

In celebration of Puma’s longstanding corroboration of African football, the global ‘sports lifestyle’ brand commissioned prominent New York artist Kehinde Wiley to create artworks in honour of the beautiful game and its African superstars. For our fashion section this season, one small seed constructed a shoot inspired by his art, featuring the Puma Africa Collection that draws on the decorative elements of Kehinde’s flamboyant portraits. South Beach Fashion Shoot

Issue 17 of one small seed – “The Wild Issue” dec/jan/feb 2009 – turned up the sun on its first fashion spread. Shot on location on the Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town, the blue skies and sweltering sun set the perfect mood for our slightly off-centre swimwear shoot. Length 05:10 (October 2009)

Taking a twist on the usual summer fare, our male model strutted his stuff in neon Speedos, tight tank-tops and oversized sunglasses. Listen in as we chat about the concept with key players from the shoot, photographer Sam Norval, art director Lauren Livesey and model Bryce Thompson.
