#bottomrightcorner: The Contributor Edition

Every week we compile a selection of music to sing you into the weekend and list them in a post called #bottomrightcorner. Sometimes new tunes, sometimes themed tunes and sometimes we ask a music aficionado to choose the tunes for us. This week, we hand over the selection process to our unofficial Detroit contributor, Mr Kelly ‘K-Fresh’ Frazier. Kelly has been sort of a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ in the Detroit hip-hop scene for the past decade. As the years have gone by, his focus has been that of a tastemaker for not only the hip-hop scene in Detroit, but of the whole music scene. Here’s five of his recent favourite tracks – enjoy and stay posted for upcoming interviews by Kelly over the next few weeks!

With a sound that touches so many genres it’s hard not to find a part you’ll love from this Detroit native. GRiZ continues to show his love of saxophones while still giving his audience what they want. Starting off tranquil before hitting its high; ‘Smash The Funk’ is a beautifully combined collection of sounds that get bodies moving. His album Mad Liberation is out now.

These Brooklyn belles should be applauded for keeping their heads on while making music that’s this rock ‘n’ roll. The sound stays neat, and never feels like four angry girls banging their instruments in an enclosed garage. ‘Quatro/Joy Unfolds’ delivers enough kick to satisfy any rocker without scaring off his double-vodka girlfriend.

The second single from Zo!’s ManMade album, delivers a sound that the radio loves. Whether sipping cocktails at some fancy-ass restaurant or smoking it up in your stylish new open plan apartment, it’s a sound that suits most situations without disappearing into the DJs set-list. When it comes to music, Zo! knows what sounds right and exactly how to deliver it.

Fort Romeau – ‘Jetée’

Fort Romeau – ‘Jetée’

In his latest release this Londoner delivers a single that reminds one of the ever-growing electronic sound right here on our own shores. Starting off slow, before adding the timeless element of a soft piano, he takes the song to a new level and ultimately turns it into something that will be remembered in an over-crowded electronic playlist. Day-drinking song: check!

Mayer Hawthorne – ‘Her Favorite Song’

Mayer Hawthorne – ‘Her Favorite Song’

Some songs are just sexier than others, and this track from Los Angeles artist, Mayor Hawthrone, falls right into that category. ‘Her Favourite Song’ contains all the elements needed to go from being a club hit to on the playlist for a ‘drinks-at-my-place’ kind of night. Definitely an artist to keep an eye out for, or to send to Pharrell Williams for his next mix.

For this week’s #bottomrightcorner, we handed it over to none other than the Manyoba BOY$! Made up of Lesotho-born Big Space and British expat Jumping Back Slash, Manyoba BOY$ are the most swanking South African underground house and techno producers around; they got white meat and dark meat like a chicken and together they bring the Manyobane$$! We asked them to choose five of their favourite tracks, and so without further ado… Presenting the Manyoba BOY$’ #bottomrightcorner!

Bob James – ‘Nautilus‘

Bob James is a jazz keyboardist and producer who is recognised as one of the pioneers of smooth jazz. His silky tunes have awarded him two Grammy trophies and a lifelong legacy among jazz’s elite. He was also member of Fourplay – a jazz supergroup that spent numerous weeks at the top of Billboard’s contemporary jazz chart when their debut self-titled album released in 1991.

James’ tracks have had a profound resonance in hip-hop circles, with numerous rappers sampling his work. For example ‘Nautilus’, taken from the album One, can be heard echoing through the heavy beats of Eric B. & Rakim’s ‘Follow the Leader’, Run-D.M.C.’s ‘Beats to the Rhyme’, and Ghostface Killah’s ‘Daytona 500’.

Alaska – ‘Alaska‘

Alaska embody South African music culture in the kwaito rhymes they’ve spilled through local airways over the last ten years. The five-piece group is made up of Lucky Mlakana, Thabo Tsotetsi, Les Ma-ada, Andrew Moloisane, and Sphiwe Pica. Their music brims with socially conscious lyricism which resonates in a variety of African languages – isiXhosa, Sesotho, isiZulu and Sepedi to name a few. The group originated in Soweto, and the track ‘Alaska’ is taken from their first album, Cool As Hell.

Kenny Larkin – ‘Northern Lights‘

Kenny Larkin is a ’90s techno banger. The Detroit producer has been described as ‘massively influential’ on the rise of techno in both Europe and America. To many who run in techno circles, Larkin is a household name. In the early 2000s he embarked on a career in comedy – fitting as he sometimes goes by the moniker, Dark Comedy – but 2012 saw him return to the dance floor sounds.

‘Northern Lights’ is a track that was produced in 1995. The song is a cool, laid-back, house-like showcase of techno in the ’90s. For all the youngsters who missed the ’90s age, take a listen.

Virgo Four – ‘Let the Music Play‘

Merwyn Sanders and Eric Lewis are Virgo Four. The duo, also known as Ace & the Sandman, salute their hometown, Chicago, in their Chicago house sounds. Chicago house is much like the smooth dance beats of electro house, except that it’s based and created in The Windy City. Their career was short-lived with only three records released, but Virgo Four’s music helped reverberate the beat of house through the streets of Chi-Town. ‘Let The Music Play’ is a silky, jazzy sample of Virgo Four’s electric old-school flavour.

Wu-Tang Clan – ‘It’s Yourz‘

‘Machine gun rap for all my niggas in the back’ – the first words of It’s Yourz’ say it all. Wu-Tang Clan are street rap invigorators who powered through American hip-hop airways throughout the ’90s. The crew is made up of a dizzying group of talent in RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and the late ‘Ol Dirty Bastard. They are widely acknowledged to be one of the most influential acts to hit the hip-hop scene and have garnered both critical and mainstream success.

The New York-bred group became famous for their story-telling rhymes which challenged social injustice, promoted Black Conscious, and defended the hustle of those running on the periphery. Their debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), placed them at the zenith of hip-hop triumph, with tracks like ‘C.R.E.A.M’ championing their arrival to the rap world.

‘It’s Yourz’ reflects the group’s focus on the harshness of the world by highlighting that regardless how insignificant man may feel; the world still belongs to us.

December is finally upon us. And that means excess. Everywhere. No matter who you are or where you are, ’tis the season to be jolly; to eat too much, drink too much and spend way too much. Christmas carols on repeat, sweaty scrambling among the red and green shiny crap, and overpriced, well, everything. Sounds depressing, doesn’t it? Well, fear not because this week’s #bottomrightcorner features some shiny new favourites, some startling collabs and some underrated, unappreciated, underground gems we know you’ll like. With just one month left to 2013, let’s spend it remembering what matters most: togetherness, eating too much and drinking too much – with the ones you love.

Freddie Joachim, Toro Y Moi & Esthero

Producer Freddie Joachim knows just how to handle a remix. Adding bits and pieces to take the song further without taking away the integrity of the original, he still manages to add his own style. This is what makes a great producer! Esthero‘s vocals are so beautiful on top of this beat, one cannot help but shut their eyes for a second to move along to the track… And we just can’t wait for Toro Y Moi‘s new album coming out January of next year called ‘Anything in Return,’ for which he had an exhibition and sneak-peek for recently in New York. Get farmiliar with all three of these amazing artists.

Dandy Teru – ‘The Grey Cat’

French art director and host for LaidBack Radio, Dandy Teru has got an ear for good music. This trip hoppy, jazzy number is a great one for the smoothest of the smooth. LaidBack has its own set of great music, so go on over; you won’t regret it.

Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks – Various

Kaidi Tatham, Akwasi Mensah, Matt Lord & Dego Ranks have pulled together a fine quartet, with future jazzy sounds that are reminiscent of some of the things you may have listened to with your father, but somehow could at the same time play to your children. Futuristic and nostalgic, as far as oxymorons go, is the only way to describe this wonderful collab. Enjoy!

Lakim & Bahwee – ‘Prima Donnas’

This track will give you goosepimples… Not because it’s touching and gentle — on the contrary. It’s got attitude for days! These guys are two of the hottest producers at the moment, and this collaboration between Bahwee’s futurisms and Lakim’s hip hop flavours has made for the perfect balance of soulful and edgy. One time for your mind!

Pépé Bradock – ‘4’ (Joe Kay’s 3:15 AM Slowed Edit)

Producer, remixer and DJ, Julien Auger, aka Pépé Bradock, is well travelled and well rehearsed in the world of techno and house. Rumour has it this track is great for late nights, or early AMs depending on how you live it… either way, we love the slowed edit by Joe Kay, and we hope you will too!

Melodiesinfonie – ‘Ithinkfrvr’

This track is brand new; having dropped his 4 track EP on December 6th, entitled The Wohlklänge EP, Swiss producer Melodiesinfonie’s music is like a drug; inducing feelings of happiness that are addictive as it gets. Check out the rest on the various sites, but in the meantime, jam to this one!

Zikomo – ‘Cookie Dough’

What a surprsise to find that ‘zikomo’ in ChiChewa, the language spoken in Malawi, means ‘thank you.’ I’m completely grateful for this track, and the many he has up on his sites right now. Funky, smooth and just hip hop enough to make you move, Zikomo is a class act, however a little underrated if I do say so myself. Enjoy these and you’ll never look back.

Featuring some new instrumentals by the likes of Seth Williams and fLako, as well as some mellow tones by XXYYXX and múm, this music is so smooth and, there’s no better way to put it, SO good. This track and its mysterious sounds move in and out at the most surprising of times… It reminds me of a dark and rainy day in a room that has a leaky roof and bowls littered all over the floor to catch the falling water. It’s gorgeous. If I had any more poetic and deep shit to say, I’d hook you guys up, but I don’t think words can help this one. Take a listen. Then go and check out the rest of his Eclosure 12″ Vinyl. Whatever this man touches turns to gold.

Seth Williams – Race the Sun

Now, ever since the likes of Christian Tiger School brought the LA-esque beatfreakiness to our shores, we’ve started to embrace the local talents that we have right here at home. That’s where Seth Wiliams comes in. With a jazz musician for a father and his mother an opera singer, Wiliams is completely self taught, and is a songwriter, singer and musician as much as he is a producer. If someone doesn’t scoop up this man right quick, it would be a sad, sad thing; his new EP Journey to Love is versatile enough to satisfy MCs and jazz vocalists alike, providing the most gorgeous music for a blissful atmosphere. Don’t sleep.

múm – We Have A Map of the Piano

This track gives me goosepimples. Balmy in all its pillowy goodness, this one reminds me of the Sigur Ros tune one listens to on trips to the forest with hipster friends. Gorgeous and gentle, this track– no album – is a winner. Famous for their glitchy music and unconventional use of instruments, Icelandic múm know how to astound.

XXYYXX – About You

The vocals on this track are esoteric and creepy, but one can’t deny the technique and talent that goes into the tracks made by XXYYXX. Marcel Everett is his name, and he’s only 17. They just seem to keep getting younger, don’t they? The video, directed by VASH, is eerie but beautiful. If you haven’t listened to this album, do so. Very soon.

Shigeto – Field Day (Braille Remix)

Majestic and twinkly, this track is one of the best Shigeto remixes yet. One can’t be sure how some of the sounds in these tracks are made – for example in the beginning of the track it appears as if a gun is being cocked – but they do indeed work well together. Listening to this track is like taking a journey through a world of wonderful sounds. Please do enjoy.

Lakim – Various

This beat-maker here has a serious hip hop flavour reminiscent of the trippy instros of the 90s. He’s just released his newest contribution entitled Esoteric, which is pretty darn good and a lot more experimental and electronically influenced… but let’s get you caught up with these tracks first before you give that a listen here.

Eric Lau – The Mission EP

And last but never least, Eric Lau. This well-travelled Brit has decided to grace our shores this week and will be working in conjunction with Beatdimensionz to bring that soulful flavour to our South African ears – live in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Lucky us! For those of you who are unfamiliar with his melodies, now’s the time to get up to scratch. Take a listen and make your way down to one of these venues. You won’t regret it!

Don’t ask us how to pronounce the name of the title track to this album, but it is a gorgeous one. 02:16 of music that can only be described as a massage for the soul. Just downtempo enough, Atupele Ndisale from Malawi aka αtμ has slowly gained a huge following of lovers of music of the instrumental variety. Check out the rest of his EP here.

Beatmaker Damu the Fudgemunk has done it again. We’ll be keeping an eye on this man, who somehow manages to capture the old school, soulful vibe that hip-hop can so easily claim, without sounding dated. You’ll have this track on repeat all day. Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

This talented young man lays it on thick… Sampling Jimi Hendrix in To Be Weightless, it’s strange to think such wonderful sounds could be made by someone so young! Blue Gene - Too Much (Live at Redbull Studios Cape Town)

Just returned from their tour reaching as far as Durban and Harare, with the close at the infamous Oppikoppi Festival 2012, Blue Gene (consisting of South African spoken word artist CreamyEwokBaggends and the french jazz guitarist Charles Amblard) have a lot more to offer in the next coming months, including a new EP and movie. While in Cape Town they showcased their new material live at Redbull Studios. Don’t miss our upcoming interview with the guys themselves!

Jesse Boykins III- I Can’t Stay (Produced by Gold Panda)

Set to perform at this year’s STR CRD Johannesburg, New Yorker Jesse Boykins III and UK producer Gold Panda get together for this banger of a track. Only in his early 20s, already throwing out some of the best indie-soul tracks with hauntingly husky Ian Kamau-like vocals, we cannot wait to see what he has in store for South Africa. Along with Gold Panda, Afta-1 and Machinedrum, everybody seems to want to get a piece. You should too!

TNGHT - Top Floor

Glasgow, Scotland and Montreal meet in this long awaited collab between Hudson Mohawke and Lunice. Deliciously bassy, this EP is a sample orgy that demands some misbehaviour… It is the season after all. Go on, listen for yourself…

Marbert Rocel – Small Hours

The first track on this here mini-mix, ‘Cause of Lovin’ is what turns a listener into a fan. Mild and groovy, this band takes quirk to a more lounge-y level. Plug in and invite some friends over for din dins and some pseudo-intellectual wine-induced conversation. This album will get under your skin.

The Soul Housing Project - Digital World

The brainchild of South African jazz pianist Bokani Dyer and Goldfish vocalist Sakhile Moleshe, this side project is one of Cape Town’s best kept secrets. In the words of the boys themselves, ‘whether you’re a broken soul, soulful soul, joyful soul, inspired soul, lost soul or a playful soul… There is a place for you in the music.’ Performing regularly around Cape Town in association with The Pan African Space Station and The Pressure respectively with music as inviting as their words, who wouldn’t want a place in this music?

The Shaolin Afronauts - Quest Under Capricorn

1970s West Africa must have been the hippest place on earth. Along with the Fela Kutis and the Tony Allens of the world, The Shaolion Afronauts really bring it, so if you like to get a little funked up every now and again, wait until you get your hands on their latest release, ‘Quest Under Capricorn.’

Ian Kamau - One Day Soon

Currently on his Pan-African tour, having just performed at The Dojo SA in Bloemfontein this past weekend, Toronto-raised Ian Kamau is another sacrilegiously underrated act. Sharing a stage in Cape Town alongside Tumi Molekane of The Volume and Femi Kuti himself among others, this year has been great for this uber-conscious creative wordsmith. He’s recently released his newest offering entitled One Day Soon along with some artworks to go with it; catch the entire album here!

Bad Bad Not Good- Flashing Lights

Apparently one of the most overlooked groups this year yet, BBNG has released their second album free online entitled BBNG2, and it is FRESH. With some of the most amazing covers you’ll get this side of the underground, from My Bloody Valentine to J Dilla to Kanye West, this jazz-hop-step trio will show you something you’ve never witnessed before. Bad Bad Not Good? Not bad…

Crazy White Boy feat. Nonku – Zoma

Having worked with the likes of B Team and Zaki Ibrahim, the 1/3 of the now-split hip hop outfit Pangaea, Nonku Phiri is a vocal powerhouse. This joint is a banger; Nonku’s soulfully catching voice makes you wanna sing right along even if you don’t understand the lyrics. With Crazy White Boy doing their Crazy White Boy tech-housey thing, this track is one you can’t sit down for.

Audiophile 021 – Triola EP

With Triola, Cape Town-based DJ/Producer, Audiophile 021, offers a meandering journey full of rich and textured sounds. The EP was released on the 25th of June on the Triplefire Music label.

The XX – ‘Angels’

In case you missed it, The XX were the biggest new thing in London when they burst onto the scene back in 2009. Their debut album was all soft beats and groovy melodies over which Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim would whisper sweet nothings to each other. Since then the young members have been doing their own thing, most notably beat-master Jamie XX’s remix album of Gil Scott-Heron’s I’m New Here. This new track features the nocturnal lovesickness that was the motif of their debut and precedes the September 10th release of their new album, Coexist.

The Antlers – ‘Drift Drive’

2009’s dark and lo-fi Hospice was the breakout album for the Brooklyn-based trio, which they followed up with Burst Apart, one of the best albums of last year. The new single conveys the feeling of aquatic sedation that seems to be the theme behind their new 4-song EP, Undersea, which will be coming out on the 24th of July.

Meursault – ‘Flittin’’

‘Flitting’ is the new single from Meursault’s third album. They make the sort of heartbroken melodies leaning towards the folk side of indie rock that makes a lazy comparison to Frightened Rabbit easy and quite accurate. There’s a coarse honesty and melancholy in this song that cuts into you like a hot gulp of of whisky. Their new album, Something For The Weakened, was released on the 16th.

Errors – ‘Relics’

Have Some Faith In Magic was an early contender for my favourite album of this year and in the months since its January release there hasn’t really been anything to knock it from its perch. Now we have the montivagant ‘Relics’ as a precursor to their new mini-album New Relics, with an ETA scheduled for October.

Dirty Projectors – ‘Gun Has No Trigger’

The last LP by Brooklyn-based indie band Dirty Projectors, 2009’s Bitte Orca, showcased the band’s eccentric and experimental leanings. After a collaborative EP with Bjork in 2010 their new album, Swing Lo Magellan, is coming out on the 9th. The new LP finds them at their most accessible yet still offering an array of interesting sounds. ‘Gun Has No Trigger’ is the first single.

The Stone Roses – ‘I wanna Be Adored’

The reformation of Manchester legends The Stone Roses has been big news for nostalgic fans and backwards-looking music magazines. However, to someone like me who was born in the same year as their famous 1989 debut a big reunion like this looks like more ageing rockstars are willing to kill their legacy and pick its bones clean. Cynicism aside, this reunion is something that means a lot to thousands of fans and makes this as good a time as any to remind ourselves why, more than fifteen years after they first disbanded, they are still adored.

The Wave Pictures make guitar music that’s familiar yet invigorating. The prolific London three-piece follow up last year’s excellent Beer In The Breakers with their new album Long Black Cars, from which ‘Eskimo Kiss’ is the first single.

The rapper Killer Mike (born Michael Render) released his sixth studio album called R.A.P. Music, produced by Definitive Jux’s El-P (Jaime Meline) and released by William Street Records. Spin mag’s Christopher Weingarten says it perfectly: ‘A child of the ’80s and a student of the Internet, Killer Mike is as exciting and wildly unclassifiable as hip-hop gets: New York noise and country shit, nods to when rap was punk and crunk was pop, Ice Cube before he needed hooks, David Banner before he needed to whisper, and Willie D before he needed anybody.’

‘Techno isn’t a genre that has birthed many consistent albums and the dub techno subgenre even less so, but one indisputable classic is Porter Ricks’ debut Biokinetics. Originally issued on the legendary Basic Channel sub-label Chain Reaction in 1996 following a trio of 12”s, ‘Biokinetics’ was the first of the label’s album releases, and still stands as its crowning achievement. The duo was made up of dark ambient pioneer Thomas Koner and sound engineer Andy Mellwig, and between them they re-framed the techno sound, imbuing the spacious ambience pioneered by label bosses Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald with a frosty, isolated experimental bent, and combining it with the sort of haunted minimalism of early Plastikman.’ (source: SoundCloud)

‘Sex, Money, Crime’ is a track from local guys, Tannhauser Gate. Len Cockcraft breaks it down a bit: ‘It’s a synth-based project based around analogue gear and trying to stay away from DAW’s and VST’s as much as possible. Inspiration comes from bands such as Tense and White Car, Cabaret Voltaire and Kraftwerk to name a few.’ They’ll be playing in Jo’burg and Pretoria on the 1st and 2nd of March. Tannhauser Gate are also in the process of remixing an exclusive for the Los Angeles band The Present Moment who are released on the legendary French label Desire.
