Here’s a thought: take any field — be it history, art, literature, sport, music, architecture, fashion, or film — and we practically guarantee that you will find an LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) individual in at least one of the categories who has had an impact on your everyday life in some way or another. Could it be mere chance that some of the most creative and popular figures in history have been and are gay? Coinkydink? We think not. one small seed takes a look at the most influential LGBT people in history. Some of them you may already know, but we bet you’re going to get a few surprises.

Don’t, even for a second, let yourself think that LGBT culture is all about Grindr, clubbing, drag and bears vs. twinks. Even in today’s times, with homosexuality becoming more and more prominent in media through shows like HBO’s Looking and movies like Blue is the Warmest Colour, the reality is that it is continually difficult to be part of the LGBT community. LGBT members have to consistently fight for their rights — rights that heterosexual people often take for granted. Current hot topics of the day include members of Pussy Riot being released and re-arrested, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signing a new anti-gay law imposing life sentences on homosexuals, and Putin’s gay ‘propaganda’ ban.

With complex issues like these being broadcast in the media, one small seed would like to shine a bit of a different light on the subject. Now don’t get us wrong — we take all homophobic issues very seriously — but by taking a fresh approach on a regularly debated topic, we’d like to remind you exactly why the LGBT community has and is genuinely making the world a better and more interesting place.

Let’s Start from the Very Beginning

No surprises here, but just so you know, homosexuality in Ancient Greece was a done thing.

The ancient Greeks considered it natural to be attracted to the ideal, athletic male towards which the society as a whole aspired.

You can’t argue with Greek logic. Think the older members from the cast of the 300 movie pairing with the younger, sexier ones. This was a real Spartan custom called ‘pederasty’ (literally meaning ‘boy love’), and many well-regarded historical figures are considered to have practiced it. Great thinkers like Plato, Herodotus and Socrates explored aspects of same-sex love in their classical antiquity, and who’s to say where else they could have explored…

Arguably, you could say that one of the most influential people in history, literally responsible for changing the world, was gay. While you may not have heard of him before, his name is Alan Turing. And what did he do? During WWII, Nazi Germany employed a tactic that involved a complex procedure where German submarines were being guided to their target through encrypted radio instructions, later decoded by a highly-sophisticated device called the Enigma machine. This tactic was virtually impossible to defend against. That is, until 27-year-old Turing came along and cracked the code. In fact, he did it so well that Churchill was receiving encoded messages before Hitler. To top it off, each and every modern computer is considered to follow the guidelines expressed by Turing almost 80-years-ago. Hmm, how do you think some right-wing conservatives feel about having a gay man to thank for our free world?

Why Queen Will Always Be King

Undoubtably, there have been many incredibly significant gay people in the past that have changed our society for the better. But history aside, in our most recent past few decades alone, there have been certain individuals who have emerged as true leaders in the gay rights movement, making it a little easier for millions of closeted homosexuals to come out and be gradually accepted into society. One of the individuals we’re thinking of in particular is the legend himself, Freddie Mercury.

60-years-ago, coming out could have destroyed one’s career and endangered one’s life. In fact, HIV/AIDS was only first discussed in films like Philadelphia, and that was just a decade ago in 1994.

Freddie changed so much for the LGBT community worldwide. Along with David Bowie (who — sidenote — was known for getting down to some hanky panky with Rolling Stone’s Mick Jagger), Freddie was one of the first bisexual rock’n roll singers who didn’t hide it. That was a big deal in the fifties and sixties, when homosexuality was illegal in countries like England and the US. By the time Freddie bid us farewell in one of his most famous songs, ‘The Show Must Go On’, he departed as an icon of hope to millions of people worldwide. Freddie was a world-class showman and has often been named ‘The Greatest Rock Legend of All Time’.

It comes as no surprise then that Freddie Mercury influenced some the greatest artists of all time, including famously gay musicians like George Michael, Boy George and Elton John. In turn, these artists have served as inspiration for current musicians like Tegan and Sara Quin, Kele Okereke from Bloc Party, Tracy Chapman, REM’s Michael Stipe, ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’s Ricky Martin and hip hop star Frank Ocean, who are free to tell the world they’re gay and can still be resoundingly successful. Freddie couldn’t have been more right when he said,

When I’m dead, I want to be remembered as a musician of some worth and substance.

From Closets to Catwalks

As much as there was Freddie to inspire gay men, there is Grace Jones, who sort of famously falls somewhere in the middle of gay and straight, man and woman. Thanks to her uncompromising androgyny that has made her an LGBT icon, Jones is the inspiration behind today’s female artists like Rihanna, Annie Lennox and Lady Gaga. She also collaborated closely with the celebrated gay artist Keith Haring, who painted his muse’s body for her ‘I’m Not Perfect (But I’m Perfect for You)’ video and the 1985 vampire flick, Vamp.

Fellow androgynous artist Andy Warhol revolutionized the art world, by frequently producing pop art that allowed people to question art. He brought fine art from a very elitist subject, and made it available to all people of all places in society. He produced paintings of famous brands like Campbells Soup cans and Coca Cola bottles, political figures like John F. Kennedy and famous faces like Marilyn Monroe. Warhol tested the limits of society and was famous for his confidence and unique style. He was a trend-setter of the sixties, and still influences society today. Indeed, some of the most famous names in the past and present art scene where LGBT members — Frida Kahlo, David Hockney, Steven Cohen and Annie Leibovitz to name a few. Surprised yet?

Of course, as effortlessly as music merges with art, so art works with fashion. The fashion industry is literally dominated by gay designers who are dictating how the world will dress. We’re talking the likes of Dolce and Gabbana, Karl Lagerfeld, Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren. Just last year, past creative director of Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs, was named Out Magazine‘s 19th most powerful homosexual.There’s something in the way Gianni Versace — who was influenced by Andy Warhol by the way — can make a fabric flow that has made being gay become practically synonymous with being en vogue.

A True Rainbow Nation

So what do all these men and women have in common besides their sexual orientation? They have made our world a better place.

Take the Love Parade for example. Started in 1989 by Dr. Motte and his girlfriend, at its peak, the Berlin electronic music festival attracted over 1.5 million people — gay and straight. Why? The festival was all about peace and international understanding through love and music. In fact, that’s exactly why gay pride parades are so amazing — aside from the bright colours, feathers and loud electronica music, everyone goes to simply have fun and spread the message of love. No harm is intended.

Quite frankly, this article is just a perti dish sample of the successful gay people that have and are shaping our world. We looked specifically at select icons, but that doesn’t mean that individuals like actress Ellen Page, NFL Football player Michael Sam, comedian Ellen DeGeneres, or actor Sir Ian McKellan aren’t worth a mention. In fact, consider it a really good sign that there’s too little space in this post to discuss all the LGBT role models there are in the world right now.

All we are trying to say is that being gay is more than okay — it has and will always exist and it’s undeniable that whatever their sexual preference may be, LGBT people add to the rich culture, diversity and interest that society has to offer. Whether you identify as heterosexual, homosexual or as someone in between — remember this: we’re all homo sapiens. So start accepting that fact if you already haven’t. Here’s to embracing the realest rainbow nation of them all.

ANDROGYNOUS ANONYMOUS: WHY POP CULTURE HAS NO GENDER

Paging through a collection of one small seed magazines, I came across a rather tickling photo shoot entitled South Beach, featured in issue 17, “The Wild Issue”. There is no mistaking its sexual undertone that defies all traditional sense of masculinity.

To be more candid, the narrative is a screaming homophile manifestation; typified by the model’s oiled body glossing the pages and a fluffy rat-like companion complementing the pink midriffs and sailor paraphernalia. This man drenched in feminine inflections got me thinking about the androgynous nature of pop culture and the first iconic gender-benders who upset the conservatives in the early ’70s.

We have moved into an age that transcends the onset of metrosexuality, past the point of David Beckham assuring everyone that it is cool to frost their hair and decorate their ears. I’m talking about the engagement of boy/girl and the fading distinction that still makes the backline of first-team rugby shudder.

One can trace the infiltration of androgyny quite simply throughout the decades. It was first hinted at during the cultural revolution of the ’60s – that era where flowers had powers and we had our first glimpses of long-haired men in flared pants. The general mood of the day was in keeping kaleidoscopes in your eyes, anti-war protests and loving thy neighbour as thoroughly as possible. It wasn’t until the ’70s came swinging in through the svelte hips of Prince and Michael Jackson that new meaning attached itself to the idea of androgyny. Even David Bowie was reincarnated in the form of his androgynous exemplar, Ziggy Stardust. Bowie’s biographer David Buckley declared that Ziggy Stardust ‘created perhaps the biggest cult in popular culture’.

As one would expect, the mainstream puppet masters of the ’70s and ’80s tried to rally the population into a climate of fear – in the name of national interest, of course – as their normative values of gender role and behaviour were being challenged. This new league of expressionists were criticised for emulating offensive, communist and even demonic values. And when the folly of those claims were overshadowed by the avalanche of success and popularity of these icons, people felt uncomfortable and quickly eased their awkward selves by equating high-pitched notes and lacy attire with homosexuality.

Isn’t irony the best? Its timely smugness points out that these ‘homosexuals’ have been linked or married to a catalogue of some of the most beautiful women in the world such as Iman, Carmen Electra and Brooke Shields – not to mention the legions of female fans that go to bed at night wishing their love would be requited.

Despite sexy being a word that can no longer be thrown around too liberally (since its decimation as the tagline of advertisers and the C-rate songstress), this celebration of the human is an exception. It has been proven that people who embrace the natural features of masculine (instrumental) and feminine (expressive) traits are more mentally healthy then those who invest solely on one end of the spectrum. Neither manhood nor the idealisation of the lady is under threat. There is simply a shift on consciousness as we begin to realise that emotion has no gender.

Levitation Bicycle by DEzien

Design outfit DEzien has released blueprints for a futuristic bicycle that can charge cellphones. The concept bicycle is called Levitation and it features an integrated battery that is charged as the bicycle is ridden. Although the battery does not power the bicycle — which means your legs will can still get a killer workout — the battery can be used to charge mobile devices through a USB port that is neatly stashed into a removable handlebar grip. A wire would then be snaked into the port and attached to a cellphone to recharge its battery. The design includes a plan to make Levitation powerful enough to power electric cars, which is surprising considering the bicycles operates through USB ports. DEzien has also made provisions for the bicycle to be decked out with an LED display that illustrates the charge level of the battery, and a Wi-Fi hotspot to keep riders connected as they move. While Levitation is still being sketched and finalised, bicycle riders can expect a future of brilliant technology if the bicycle comes into fruition.

Grindrite ‘weed-stasher’ Watch

The creatives at Vaporite have produced an interesting little watch that has a secret box to stash some herb. The nifty device has a removable watch face with a smell-proof space underneath to hide a few grams of weed. The Grindrite is also embedded with a mini herb grinder so that when 4:20 comes wearer’s are ready to go. While some might have doubts about the watch’s ability to function as a reliable timepiece, the Grindrite serves its purpose brilliantly.

PUNK: Chaos to Couture by Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art has released their annual exhibition showpiece and its theme is punk. The exhibition — called PUNK: Chaos to Couture — features a 100 costume designs for men and women ranging from original grunge punk garments from the mid-1970s to modern contemporary high fashion. The Costume Institute pays homage to punk and its influence on haute couture and ready-to-wear clothing lines, aiming to unveil the extent of punk’s impact of the fashion we wear and see. The exhibition artfully contrasts the ‘make it yourself’ concept of punk with the ‘tailored’ aesthetic of haute couture, illustrating how the two worlds interact to produce some of the most contemporary designs pieces. Presented as an immersive multimedia, multisensory experience, the clothes will be animated with period music videos and soundscaping audio techniques to mesh the feel of the 1970s anti-establishment atmosphere with the millenium age. The exhibition is on view from May 9 through August 14 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Exchange by NATIVE

Launched by NATIVE, The Exchange is the world’s first ever cashless fashion boutique. Of course a cashless fashion boutique begs the questions: how do we pay for clothes? Well, while the clothing isn’t free, The Exchange is a concept created to aid those in need of organ donations. The pop-up store — housed in Cavendish Square, Cape Town — will not accept cheques, cash, debt or credit cards, but it will accept your help to register as an organ donor. The Exchange opened its doors on 10 May 2013 and will stay open until its range of clothing and accessories designed by 25 of SA’s top designers has been ‘exchanged’. NATIVE partnered with Organ Donor Foundation SA to make the project possible. Speaking on the idea behind the concept, NAVIVE’s Executive Creative Director, Ryan McManus said:

Fashion has typically been synonymous with consumerism. We were looking for a way in which we could change the currency of meaningless consumerism and shift it to the currency of life by purchasing fashion with organ donor registration

ANAR Child Abuse Advertisement

Spanish child-help organisation ANAR Foundation has released an ad campaign that raises awareness around child abuse simultaneously communicating embedded messages child abuse victims, encouraging them to step forward and seek help. The ad uses a technique called lenticular printing – which is typically reserved for 3D posters – to create a poster that displays different images depending on the angle it is viewed from. To an adult standing above 1.3m the ad reads: ‘sometimes, child abuse is only visible to the child suffering it’ with an image of a boy in the background. From the perspective of a 10 -year-old boy with average height the poster shows an image of a child with brusies on his face, a hotline number and the message, ‘if somebody hurts you, phone us and we’ll help you’. The advert is a breakthrough is communicating with people who need help without alerting abusers as to the hidden content of the message. While the ANAR poster has been recognised because of its appearance on news and social media, future commercials of similar intent can go safely undetected to help people.

Chris Hadfield Shoots Space Music Video

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield has made a name for himself and garnered thousands of fans from his brilliantly candor and beautiful tweets from space. After spending five months residing in the International Space Station, the space expert is set to return later in May and has marked his farewell to the cosmos with a cover of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’. The video is the first ever music video footage to be captured in outer space and is a one of Hadfield’s final shares from the space station with earthlings. While we’ll be sad to see Hadfield leave the supernatural otherworldy universe, we can’t wait to see what he’ll do when he sets his feet on the ground. Hadfield captioned the video with a nod to Bowie and an early goodbye:

Luke Pritchard, Hugh Harris, and Peter Denton are The Kooks. The trio met during their studies at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music in East Sussex in 2002, and formally came together as The Kooks in 2004. Taking their name from the famous David Bowie track, Pritchard and former band-mate Paul Garred were the creative energies behind the band’s formation, persuading Harris and Denton to join under the guise of a school project. With a shared fondness for the music of David Bowie, The Police, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, the band quickly began to work on their first demo in an effort to get noticed and play local gigs.

The band was welcomed on stages in Sussex, and their demo attracted offers from an array of music managers and record labels. They only had to wait four months after their emergence as a group before they were signed to Virgin Records – one of music’s premier hotspot record companies. Since then they have released three albums: Inside In/ Inside Out (2006), Konk (2008), and Junk Of The Heart (2011). Inside In/ Inside Out was a global success that spawned mega-hits like ‘Naive’ and ‘She Moves in Her Own Way’ to cement The Kooks’ arrival as one of the forerunners of English indie rock. Their debut record also brought The Kooks numerous accolades winning them the award for Best UK & Ireland Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2006, and a nomination at The Brit Awards for the single ‘She Moves in Her Own Way’. Their second record Konk shot to number one in UK charts, while Junk Of The Heart sold in excess of 3 million records worldwide.

#BOTTOMRIGHTCORNER – THE QUENTIN TARANTINO BIRTHDAY EDITION

Every week we compile a selection of music to sing you into the weekend and list them in a post called #bottomrightcorner. Sometimes new tunes, sometimes themed tunes and sometimes we ask a music aficionado to choose the tunes for us. Yesterday, 27 March, Quentin Tarantino — creator of an intertextual movie-planet as distinct as Mars — turned 50. Evidently, this week’s edition features only ‘tarantinoesque‘ anthems. As you may know, the director earned a lot of his cult status credibility — not only through clever non-linear storytelling, controversial yet exhilarating violence and unapologetic character creation — but through the use of well-timed music and popular culture references. Here’s a list of songs that make these films what they are; starting with 1992’s Reservoir Dogs and ending with 2012’s Django Unchained, they are paired with a quote that shows off Tarantino’s across-the-board knowledge of popular culture.

The first of four performances in the Live Performances Series from adidas All Originals sees the revolutionary indie band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah performing in S.A. for the first time. CYHSY will play in CT on April 13 & in Jozi on April 14. Read on to win a dbl ticket to the CT or Jozi show!

CYHSY first came together in 2004 and quickly earned critical and popular acclaim with the 2005 release of their self-titled (and self-released) debut album. The album included hits such as ‘The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth’, ‘Over and Over Again (Lost and Found)’ and ‘Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood’ catapulted them from playing for small crowds to headlining major gigs and selling more than 125,000 copies – without a label. How did this unassuming Brooklyn band generate all that applause?

It remains one of the internet’s biggest individual success stories in music. They managed to get onto an endless list of popular blogs and received a positive review from Pitchfork Media who featured them in their ‘Best New Music’ list. The band gained further recognition when industry heavyweights, David Bowie and David Byrne were identified as fans of the band.

Hysterical Music Video

Hysterical is the bands third album and came after a brief hiatus that the band took following two very successful albums and a few years of non-stop touring. With its elegant hooks, simmering atmospherics, and uncommon use of space and intensity, Hysterical widens the band’s idiosyncratic formula, incorporating a remarkably expansive tidal wave of sound, all multi-layered keyboard tracks and big, booming drums. Imbued with sweeping synthesizers, juddering bass, and all manner of percussive dynamics, songs like ’Same Mistake,’ ‘Misunderstood,’ and the elongated piano-pumping epic, ‘Adam’s Plane’ are marked by inventive and boldly articulated arrangements that form a veritable vortex of melody and rhythm.

With Hysterical, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah came together and crafted something that feels fresh, invigorating and new, no less so than to the band themselves.
