Aerial Nudes : John Crawford

Crawford, being drawn to the birds-eye view is clearly fascinated on looking down in vertical perspective. His latest series Aerial Nudes includes photographing individual naked bodies from extreme heights. And if this isn’t captivating enough, we dare you to look at the locations used.

For the series a model named Carina would be carefully arranged for the shoot and in less than 10 minutes Crawford would have flown up 600 feet to capture the image. This was the call flow for each shoot day. Carina was used for her rawness that she portrayed in the images – her pubic region left unshaved.

The result is outlandish, suave and entertaining. The shots are all carefully designed to provoke the viewer to have a second look to discover exactly what it is that one looks at. In each photo there is an in-depth creation that goes beyond the first abstract impression, or so it seems.

With a background in commercial and fine art photography, it’s easy to believe that Crawford’s photography is centered on a foundation of creative thought processing. Feuds with perspective, patience and ‘the Photoshop attitude’ are abundant for the average and casually expert photographer; our man Crawford refreshingly overlooks these areas and steers towards capturing images which avoid too much technicality, and so we say sayanara to those days.
