JR asks us all to become the subject, protagonist, passerby and interpreter in this global artwork.

On display will be a mix of colour prints as well as his signature wood mounted monochromatic paper pieces telling the story of JR’s global initiative to employ art as a tool for global communication and understanding. Works within the gallery will highlight various actions JR has accomplished around the globe and will include images from Wrinkles of the City Project in Berlin (spring 2013), his journey to North Korea and new images recreated in 2012 from the 2004-06 project, Portrait of a Generation set in the ‘Les Bosquets’ ghetto of Paris. The buildings that featured the original images have since been destroyed so this new series sees the faces looking at each other across an abyss of time and degradation, a mise en abime that speaks to the heart of Paris’ recent history.

Out on the streets of the nation’s capital, the artist invites the community to become part of public art project, turning each participant’s portrait and identity into communal artwork. Spurred by his award of 2011 TED prize and subsequent TED Conference, JR called for the creation of a global participatory art platform: INSIDE OUT. The underlying concept of the project is to provide anyone and everyone with the opportunity to share with the world their portrait and a statement of for what they stand.

Since its conception, the INSIDE OUT Project has travelled from Ecuador to Nepal, Mexico to Palestine and most recently to New York inspiring a call to action on various themes including democracy, hope, violence between gangs, immigration, and climate change. To date over 150,000 people from across 108 countries have participated in this epic art project.

And if you’re in London during October, you’ll get a chance to create your own black and white portrait in travelling INSIDE OUT trucks where they will be subsequently printed as large posters and pasted onto various iconic London sites. JR asks us all to become the subject, protagonist, passerby and interpreter in this global artwork.

Over the past eight years Hugo has turned his eye on cramped townships, contested farmlands and abandoned mining areas; psychologically charged still lifes in people’s homes; sites of political significance; drifters and the homeless; his pregnant wife, and his daughter moments after her birth; the domestic servants who have worked for the Hugo family over three generations. The series alternates between intimate and public spaces, with particular emphasis on the growing disparity between rich and poor, and reveals Hugo’s deeply conflicted feelings about his home. It confronts complex issues of colonisation, racial diversity and economic disparity. Kin endeavours to locate his young family in a country with a fraught history and an uncertain future.

Hugo describes the Kin project as:

An engagement with the failure of the South African colonial experiment and my sense of being ‘colonial driftwood’ … South Africa is such a fractured, schizophrenic, wounded and problematic place. It is a very violent society and the scars of colonialism and apartheid still run very deep. Issues of race and cultural custodianship permeate every aspect of society, and the legacy of forced racial segregation casts a long shadow…. How does one live in this society? How does one take responsibility for history, and to what extent should one try? How do you raise a family in such a conflicted society? Before getting married and having children, these questions did not trouble me; now, they are more confusing. This work attempts to address these questions and to reflect on the nature of conflicting personal and collective narratives. I have deeply mixed feelings about being here. I am interested in the places where these narratives collide. Kin is an attempt at evaluating the gap between society’s ideals and its realities.

Hugo was born in 1976 in Johannesburg and grew up in Cape Town, where he lives. His survey exhibition, This Must Be the Place, has showed at the Fotomuseum Den Haag, The Netherlands; Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland; Stimultania Photographic Centre, Strasbourg, France (2012); Ludwig Museum, Budapest, Hungary (2013); and continues to tour. Hugo won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Art in 2007; the KLM Paul Huf Award and the Arles Discovery Award at the Rencontres d’Arles Photography Festival in 2008; the Seydou Keita Award at the 9th Rencontres de Bamako African Photography Biennial, Mali, in 2011, and was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse photography prize in 2012.

Issue 24 of one small seed asks you to ‘Listen to my Colour and Look at my Sound’. Music, motion, words and colour – looking beyond the obvious, our latest issue brings a union of the senses. To follow is an all-inclusive preview of the new issue: a full breakdown of content that resonates with inspiration. Hold on tight…

The human story is told in the language of pop culture. Coca Cola designed Santa Claus and Hugo Boss the uniforms for the Order of the Death’s Head. Jimi played The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock and the Devil went down to Georgia. David Byrne wore a big suit and Princess Leia that bikini. We couldn’t handle the truth, needed a bigger boat and loved the smell of napalm in the morning. Assorted male models shot JFK, RFK and JR, then Biggy Smalls, Tupac and the Sheriff. And something made Andy Warhol’s Marilyns smile. Maybe it was the hand up the Mona Lisa’s skirt. (Gustav Swart)

This issue’s theme of ‘Listen to my Colour and Look at my Sound’ led us to some odd doors as we sought artists that bridged the divide between the visual and the aural.  An interview with legendary album artist Storm Thorgerson – referred to some as the 6^th member of Pink Floyd – allowed us to revisit the aesthetics of the ’70s, while 21^st Century poster designer Dan Khulken tells us about making posters for bands like Black Keys and The National. Issue 24 is a 30 000-plus words visual explosion, and one such visually exploding artist we spoke to is the infamous Gonzo illustrator and Hunter S Thompson’s partner-in-grime, Ralph Steadman. Another artist that tore through the ’70s and still doing what he does best is Horace Panter – the bass player of The Specials. In this issue, Panter gives us a candid account of his life in music and his life as an artist, from playing with The Clash to his time working as a white van man, he shares memories of his life on a road less traveled.

Our fashion spread this issue comes direct from Tokyo, Japan. Creating a 3D-like effect, reminiscent of Nintendo games and early Star Wars films, Japanese designer Kunihiko Morinaga created his Low Resolution collection around the 8-bit inspired colorful square blocks. Mari Sarai’s lewd black and white nudes feature as this issue’s photography section, her subjects including celebs like Gavin Rossdale’s daughter Daisy Lowe and model Janice Dickinson. We have a feast for the ears in the form of interviews with Kenya’s globe conquering Just a Band and the revolutionary American poet Abiodun Oyewole – the man who robbed the KKK and worked with legendary Jazz musician Gil Scott-Heron on his famous song ‘The Revolution will not be Televised’.

Ever tasted the letter ‘f’? Or smelled the colour blue? Well, some people have! One of our main features this issue is on Synesthesia – the condition that lets people see sound as colour – and trace its path through the methods and madness of some of the brightest stars in the human firmament. Click HERE for a preview of the feature. On the local frontier, we sit down with singer/song writer/actress Sannie Fox, electronic trio Digital Rockit and all four members from Cape Town band iScreamStix. Olmeca Editión Black Tequila joins us in showcasing electronic DJs/Producers, with this issue bringing Blush n Bass and Felix Laband to the party.  We watched architecture dance slowly to visible music in our architecture feature, looking at structures like The Sum of Days, NY; Stillspotting, NY; the Jewish Museum, Berlin; Jetty Square and more.

Ending with the beginning, our cover for Issue 24 is devoted to one of the street artist/videographer Mr Brainwash’s tongue-in-cheek creations. This issue features a six-page interview with the artist, who talked to us from his L.A. home about money, art and Andy Warhol. Showcasing at 34FineArt Gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town is an exclusive selection of Mr Brainwash’s latest artwork, including issue 24’s ‘Madonna’ silk screen on paper with spray paint.

THE LAST WORD

We leave this to South African writer duo Headline Payoff and illustration by Mark Venter.

Having studied Fine art at UCT, Stellenbosch and the Academie der Bildenden Kunste, Dresden, Menck has, throughout her many years of painting, gathered a significant following. The subjects Clare Menck chooses to paint have a characteristic quirkiness to them and speak of a world of personal associations.

Menck’s new body of work exists out of large-scale oil on wood. The oil paint on wood technique adds intensity and vibrant colours to her work. The images appear to be seemingly soft but when you go in for a closer look you can see the coarse brush strokes which makes it even more of a masterpiece. The title of the exhibition, immersed, refers to Menck being submerged in water as is represented in her swimmer self-portraits. It also refers to the subjects being immersed in their natural environment, a space that becomes the emotional and psychological soundboard of an inner world. When looking at her body of work as a whole, soothing is the word that come to mind.

Cobus Haupt’s beautiful figure studies of ordinary people cast in bronze and cement is the perfect example of the ambivalent relationship that exists in art between reality and representation. By leaving bumps and imperfections unresolved Haupt highlights the casting process, making his work as much about the transparency of method as it is about the human figure. Haupt’s work diverges from the conventions of the western tradition of figurative sculpture and follows its own path. He highlights the relationship between touching and seeing. This emphasis combined with his innovative methods of display, culminates in a highly inventive and current exhibition.

Haupt won first prize in the 2001 PPC Sculpture Competition (technical). He has exhibited in both Cape Town and Johannesburg and has work held in the Webber Wentzel Collection.
