Where have you been for the last few years and how did it happen that you are touring with Lady Gaga?

In the last two years, well, the band got back together, we decided to do a new album and we did not want to do anything till the album came out. But then Download Festival in the UK offered us a really nice slot, headlining with Def Leppard last summer. So we came back with that gig and since then we have toured the States twice, we have been to Australia and we have done all the European festivals. We have our album coming out in a couple of weeks…evidently, Lady Gaga asked us to support her on her world tour, so we are very pleased with the way things have worked out.

What is the band’s relationship with her?

It’s one of mutual admiration and respect because she does not care what people think of her and she is ready to be ridiculed and, I think, having the courage to be different is the most important thing.

I read somewhere of the groups idea – while touring with her – of having everyone dress a different historical era, why would you have you been a Greek Philosopher?
(laughs)
Haha, well, properly because I am the Philosopher of the band, Bass playing is black art, it’s a different mystery, and for that reason Bass players hold the key, which unlocks the portal of dreams.

What’s your philosophy on life?

Time is a human mind construct and the future and the past are intermingled, that’s what I believe… Deep in our subconsciousness we know what is happening next.

image: The Darkness

Have you ever been to South Africa?

Justin has been there on holiday and he said he had a great time – really nice lifestyle great people, fantastic food and just freedom to be what you want to be. But that the water was really cold!

Did you hear about ticket servers being crashed in a ticket frenzy for the concert here in South Africa in December?

Frankie: Oh? No, I did not hear about that… but that great.
oss: Yeah, fans rushed to web retailer ‘computicket‘ so hard that servers shut down after being overwhelmed by traffic.
Frankie: So there are two gigs? One in Joburg and one in Cape Town.
oss: Yeah
Frankie: It’s the first gig that we picked in the whole of Africa, we are really excited… I remember in 2004 we got a lot of emails from fans in South Africa asking why we had not been there, so this is long overdue….

With your new album ‘Hot Cakes‘ to be realized soon, any chance we can get a sneak peek/favorite line or lyric?

Well, what I can tell you that one of the songs is called ‘She is Just a Girl Eddie’ and it’s all about our younger time and Justin is singing the song to him, on his relationship when his girlfriend broke up, and I think that characterizes a lot of the album because, even though we are being perceived as a cult help-band, our songs are not about fast cars and fast living, although we have a lot of bravado on stage.

image: The Darkness

Who would win a match of tennis between you and Justin?

I used to beat him! But the very last time I played him…his sheer level of fitness…he is such an amazing physical specimen these days he managed to overpower me with sheer stamina. It’s close between us, we have not played this year… We will properly play in South Africa because we will have a lot of time on our hands. It’s quite a big production this Gaga tour, which means there are quite a lot of days off in between two gigs.

Wikipedia tells me that you had worked as a tour guide in the Venezuela mountains, any truth to this?

Yeah it’s true, at one stage I was staying in the Del Orinoco Delta, with a bunch of students, we were sleeping on hammocks in the jungle for two weeks, with the one-eyed Indians – very gentle type of Indians…
And basically I went to collect some wood and I went to pick up a machete in the middle of a wasps nest, there was this jungle of brow bees and I was stung over 30 times by these bees, and I almost died, so I had to give up tour guiding. I came back to the UK and that was when Justin told me he had started to be a singer in The Darkness.

How would you sum up your comeback?

I would say it has to do with the collective responsibility to repair the damage we did to ourselves and the band, our reputation towards the end, we are very lucky to have a second chance to come back and hopefully fulfill our potential and repay the fans for believing in us. We are 100% focused on being a great roll model for what we believe rock and roll to be.
You know everyone’s idea of rock and roll is different, our vision of rock and roll is something which advocates/accumulates the ludicrous aspects. So with bits of Jeremy lewis, Lewi Richard and moving along to the more modern aspects ACDC, Queen.

In a dream world, lets go back 30 years, who would you have liked to tour with. ’60/’70

Yeah that’s a good question, 1970s would have been maybe ABBA?! They were actually really amazing, some of their elements were kinda rocking, just the tin planet pop, you know, the aspect of that, to do what we do, just the song idea and the euphonic nature, the songs…

What are you wearing?

Funny enough, now I am wearing the same underwear I did for our Funny or Die sketch, you can check it online, they gave us brown underpants to wear to accentuate what we were doing. I actually kept them and put them on this morning.

‘Flitting’ is the new single from Meursault’s third album. They make the sort of heartbroken melodies leaning towards the folk side of indie rock that makes a lazy comparison to Frightened Rabbit easy and quite accurate. There’s a coarse honesty and melancholy in this song that cuts into you like a hot gulp of of whisky. Their new album, Something For The Weakened, was released on the 16th.

Have Some Faith In Magic was an early contender for my favourite album of this year and in the months since its January release there hasn’t really been anything to knock it from its perch.
The reformation of Manchester legends The Stone Roses has been big news for nostalgic fans and backwards-looking music magazines. However, to someone like me who was born in the same year as their famous 1989 debut a big reunion like this looks like more ageing rockstars are willing to kill their legacy and pick its bones clean. Cynicism aside, this reunion is something that means a lot to thousands of fans and makes this as good a time as any to remind ourselves why, more than fifteen years after they first disbanded, they are still adored.

The rapper Killer Mike (born Michael Render) released his sixth studio album called R.A.P.
Lola Dupré:

I think as an artist all you can do is start a dialogue amongst your viewers, for example, I am just about to start a portrait of Julian Assange, in my work I don’t intend to say something is good or bad, just to raise a discussion about something I think should be discussed. This is why I often work with contemporary political images. But indeed with a lot of my work, I find humour and horror to be the most attractive things to people. A new viewpoint of an established norm is my motivation.

A man who understood how integral design is to how we experience and engage with a product. The need to simplify our chaotic lives in every way possible, launching products without manuals, having only one button controlling everything and employing basic human instincts into the core of the product.

That’s been one of my mantras — focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex (Jobs)

His keen eye on all the smaller things is one of the reasons why Apple is the most successful company in the world today.

As soon as we see the all-important ‘i’ in font of a word, we immediately associate it with Apple, iPhone, iPad, iPod, the list goes on and on. The obvious assumption would be that Apple has trademarked its famous ‘i’ but no, there was never any need. Apple’s convincing marketing has reassured us that any word or product with that vowel is related to the company. The thought of even copying it is rather stupid. This little letter is the tenth most used word in the English language and our favorite pronoun. So, why did Apple find the need to use it? The answer is obvious. We as consumers associate with it so well because we feel that this technology belongs to us and was made just for us. Genius wouldn’t you say?

Jobs stated that:

Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service.

The Apple Logo is a testament to his clear vision, a sleek and elegant representation of the company. First multi-coloured but now modernized by making it monochromatic, smooth lined, including zero text and above all else a symbol of pop culture. It was designed to portray a lust for knowledge and incase you manage to confuse an apple and a tomato, Rob Janoff, designer of the logo, included the bite.

Serif, sans-serif, kerning – gibberish to most folk but another reason why Jobs was so unique, he actually knew the difference between typefaces and what all this type terminology meant. After dropping out of college, Jobs continued to go to the classes he was interested in and one of those was Calligraphy. If he hadn’t, we might be sitting at our computers with only boring Times New Roman to use. Jobs’s motto of ‘staying hungry, staying foolish’ has allowed us to express ourselves better in this digital age.

The creative community has been altered due to Jobs’ impact. His part ownership of Pixar Animation brought us the first computer animated feature, Toy Story. Artists like David Hockney use the artistic apps on the iPhone and iPad to create their work. He comments that ‘ it is a great drawing instrument, marvellous range of marks, if you get into it. Very subtle colour you can get, probably for an amateur it can be a bit too complicated but you’ve got a dozen different brushes on it and remember, the iPad drawing, you can always go back to them.’ Apple offers so many advantages where art and music are concerned. Outcomes that aren’t easily achieved on a PC as the technology just isn’t geared in that way.

My name is David McWanre and I sing in the band.

What are you busy with at the moment?

We are non-stop right now. After writing the new record, we spent two months asking local Boston friends/studio owners if we could please record with them for free, because we didn’t have a cent. All we had was a 40K dept from trailers and vans breaking and other bad luck. Than after miraculously16 friends/studio owners said yes, the record was made. We are living a steady riot of a life right now.

How does it feel to be in the punk/ska scene for so long?
Hm, ‘how does it feel to be in the punk/ska scene for so long’…I guess I feel free from normality and very lucky.

Is there any young bands that are influencing you at the moment?

Absolutely not. I guess the only thing that has made my head turn slightly is Matt the singer from I Set My Friends On Fire’s stage demeanor – he’s one interesting guy and the heart of the Japanese band Conviction. Other than that the only person playing right now that really inspires me is the band Melt-Banana. And I do not mean that in a pretentious way, just an honest way; either you are inspired or you are not.

If you could do it all over again, would you rather sell out for the bling or suffer
for the music?

The question has tough wording. You can suffer in music while attaining ‘bling’ and you can be in a non-lucrative band and not suffer. I am very happy where I am at, but yes being able to take a girl out and not worry about money is comforting.

What / who inspires your music?

Operation Ivy, Melt-Banana, old beat beatnik surf rock, Steinbeck, Bukowski and Quentin Tarantino.

Name five books that changed your lives.

1.	Everything and Anything from Steinbeck.
2.	Everything and anything from Bukowski
3.	Winesburg Ohio, Sherwood Anderson
4.	A Collection Of Poems, Steve Crain
5.	The Sun Also Rises, Hemingway

Whiskey or beer?

Beer.

Bong or a blunt?

My mother may read this.

How… I mean really… how did you guys hookup with Melt Banana?

Our graphic designer Yo-Yo-Yosef hooked it up. He introduced us at the Middle East club in Boston over soup and we both thought the split was a pretty fun idea.

How have you guys translated the DIY mentality to the online world?

Oh just like everyone else, with social networks. I’m of the opinion that today’s musician are DIY if that means not leaving the house or being physical.

What happened to the ‘American Dream?’

What happened to the ‘American Dream?’ Well the ‘American Dream’ means if you work hard you can have anything you want and that is true today than it ever was. Within my inner thought, I believe I am proof of that. I think you may be asking, ‘What is changing as far as the American mentality’ – and I would say, ‘when I was a kid we used to have a newspaper called The Inquirer (The Sun for you) and today America is The Inquirer.’

What comes after Capitalism finally fails the western world?

Well that states that it will fail, saying that I believe it will fail. I’ll also answer what happens ‘if’ capitalisms fails?

#1: ‘When’ it fails:

I don’t think America will allow that. America will either mold what it means to be in a Capitalist county by making the needed changes in which every American has the freedom to express and vote on; America would potentially fix the changes needed in the system of government it truly believes in and which was build to keep people free from censorship and oppression. Laws would be changed and new ones made.

#2 ‘If’ it truly collapsed:

Well at that point I would hope that the right people with a more evolved mentality would then embark on a new and better form of government, which still allows it’s people freedom of expression, freedom speech and freedom to live their dream; what that form of government is, I do not know but I hope will illuminate itself if Capitalism falls. I believe one must remember how quickly ones freedoms can truly be taken away once might crushes right. My mother always said, ‘Young ladies don’t know it, but it will be their freedoms taken 1st.

How has the War on Drugs affected your lives / family?

As a young kid I had always loved running from the police; it is exciting.

Share with us some wisdom of ‘living on the road’ for 15 years.
I would just back up what you have already heard and that is that one could potentially die any day, so you might as well go live your life and see your world.

And I will add this little guy I wrote:

drowning in demons, reaching for your devil

you must stop
battling all the little demons
while the devil himself sits calmly watching
can’t you see,
that the devil is just keeping you busy?
he knows you’ll never think of knocking him down
while you’re distracted
if you want to end it,
end it
if you want progress, make progress
stop wasting your productive years
battling those little demons
want blood?
slay the big guy
what the hell is it you want anyway?
let all those little demons just hang on you
while you move forward
move strong toward his chair
grab your devil by his neck
surprise him; knock him down
the little ones will jump off once they see that
flex every muscle
put your brow down
you can have anything you want

‘For The Damned, The Dumb & Delirious,’ how jaded is the underground culture
in America?

Underground music culture or dead people under ground? Well dead people underground don’t have much of a culture, but yes are very jaded. King Tut has a lot of culture, but he’s above ground. I don’t think the underground music culture is jaded in the least in America. Everyone seems to be having a solid time. The ideals of the underground culture in the ’80s isn’t the same in the ’90s that isn’t them same today, so I can’t truly compare. The album title is cheeky yes, but in good fun; we truly wrote the record for us and them. I think the most jaded people in the music and film scene are the ones that post hateful opinion on the internet. People need to lighten up.

What’s next?

Well after this I have to go into the city, get the van, then hook it up to the trailer across town, then clean the van and trailer, count the merch, order new merch, then head in the city again tomorrow to print new merch and my new book, then close the cabin I’m living in, bring in the dock, pack my bag, head to rehersal, then head off to the U.S. tour for a month; then on to England and Europe.

Thanks guys, Have a great time! Peace!

Thanks to you too man; thanks for giving a shit.

I’m surprised, yes. Given that I’m American, and a product of the American education system, I was quite surprised to learn of the existence of a ‘South’ Africa. The globes we buy from Walmart only feature the US of A on them so I’m not sure exactly where you are but I’m guessing it’s close to Florida.

I still illustrate, I just don’t make clever little jokes for art directors. I make clever little jokes for people to hang above their sofas.
