Often forgotten due to their size and slimy nature, the dos and don’ts of snail life have now been exposed through Ukrainian photographer Vyacheslav Mishchenko‘s macro lens. The beautiful close-ups change our perceptions of the plant-destroying goo-in-a-shell, making their lifestyle look quite idyllic and the creatures quite adorable.

It took photographer Iwan Susanto from Tangerang, Indonesia, ten minutes each to take pictures of what look like extraterrestrial visitors posing for a portrait. They are — you might have guessed — in fact extreme close-ups of insects who are just five centimetres away from the lens. The colourful images are spectacular examples of macro photography, a technique where the subject appears to be larger than it is in reality.
