Mike Miller: West Coast dialogues

Born in ’64, Mike Miller spent his early years inspired by the skate, surf and film industry in his home town, Los Angeles. Heading to Europe to work on fashion photography, Miller soon found himself back in LA and right in the middle of a booming music industry. Juxtapoz’s photo editor Estevan Oriol sat down with the LA photographer, here’s what happened.

At first glance Mike Miller appears to fit the profile of what a slightly older poster-boy for Los Angeles should look like. Complete with a seasoned beard and a checkered shirt, the type made famous by the city’s native Latino’s. It is about midway through his fourth sentence that I assure myself that this middle-aged man has seen most of it, if not all. Name dropping hip-hop heavyweights such as Eazy-E, Tupac and Cypress Hill could not have been any easier as this filmmaker/photographer made it seem.

His clientele list could well bring peace to the Middle East. After studying film at UCLA, Miller’s first gig was as assistant director on a Warner Brother film set. During a short-lived hiatus from film, Miller made a transition to photography, after which he went on to shoot album covers for hip-hop groups who sprung up from the inner city.

It’s only when you tight with the band, you start to click with them and you see them developing, then they always put you down (Miller)

It’s evident that Miller’s ability to rise up in the industry grew from his familiarities of the West Coast scene together with the subcultures it prided itself on. Behind him – in what seems to be Miller’s editing suite – sits two monitors along with a dozen of hard drives dedicated to commercials and short films. At that moment, Miller withdraws a black and white portrait of Jack Nicholson of which he thankfully reclines mentioning too much about, the mystery in which it now lingers in is appealing.

‘I have a book I’m working on now, it’s about living in New York Miller,’ says Miller. Since this interview, the book – titled West Coast Hip Hop: A History In Pictures – was published (February, 2012) with an exhibition that followed in April.

It is on that notion whereby I label him as a truly gratifying artist considering that Miller’s bread and butter was the City of Angles. Miller is also currently working on full length feature film. I’m uncertain as to whether or not Mike Miller prefers to continue his work incognito or if he’s doubtfully still trying to catch a break. Because not being mainstream is mainstream right?

A Joyful Noise by Gossip Music

Ever-evolving and perpetually defying convention, Gossip is back with their fifth studio album, A Joyful Noise, set to be released on May 22. A Joyful Noise was produced by pop genius Brian Higgins (Kylie Minogue, Pet Shop Boys) The album’s first single, ‘Perfect World’, will be released as digital on 13th March.

A blend of soul, gospel, rock, funk, disco, punk, passion and rebellion, Gossip is comprised of vocalist Beth Ditto, guitarist Nathan Howdeshell, and drummer Hannah Blilie. Originally formed in Olympia, Washington in 1999, Gossip first garnered attention in the UK with the release of their 2006 breakthrough album Standing In the Way of Control, and they have been in the spotlight ever since. Their most recent album, 2009’s Music For Men, sold over 1 million copies globally and was raved about on both sides of the Atlantic, with Clash declaring it “the most euphoric thing you’ll hear this year.” Gossip’s front woman, the irresistibly bold and challenging Beth Ditto, whose new makeup collaboration with MAC Cosmetics will launch this winter for their summer collection, makes it impossible to not fall for the band. Best captured by Billboard, Ditto “employs all of her hard-edged sexiness and manages to charm with an appealingly intimidating allure,” instantly reeling you in.

Recorded in both Xenomania, Higgins’ studio in England, and KBC Studios in Portland, Oregon, A Joyful Noise stays true to Gossip’s trademark brash and unapologetic nature – that is, as true as possible for a band that is constantly reinventing itself and pushing boundaries. Working with Higgins, Gossip sought to create their own brand of pop.

Ditto proclaimed, I spent the whole year listening to ABBA and not listening to the radio, accounting for the pulsing energy of A Joyful Noise.

The album’s infectious tracks will certainly be welcomed by fans who are already entranced by Gossip’s insanely danceable beats, and will no doubt lure in many more.

Since their previous studio effort, Gossip have toured extensively,covering the major music festival circuits, making appearances at Coachella in the US, Rock am Ring in Germany, and Glastonbury in the UK. Their live shows are touted as one of the best around, with NME dubbing them

The greatest punk rock’n’roll disco soul band on the planet” and insisting “Everyone needs to hear this band and dance like there’s no tomorrow.(NME)

“Police Work”: An evocative photographic exhibition

Currently exhibited at the Museum of the City, New York is a haunting photographic collection from Magnum photographer Leonard Freed, which documents the ‘sometimes boring, sometimes corrupting, and sometimes dangerous lives’ of ’70s NY police officers.’

Titled Police Work, the exhibition exposes the harsh reality of police life on the streets in New York; a life filled with both tragedy and compassion. In Police Work, Leonard Freed worked alongside the policemen of New York in order to see what life ‘on the beat’ was really like. To follow is a selection of photographers from the exhibition.
