THE HIVES

The Hives will no doubt satisfy long-standing fans with music ranging from their early albums Barely Legal (1997) and Veni Vidi Vicious (2000) to Tyrannosaurus Hives (2004), The Black and White Album (2007) and their most recent Lex Hives (2012).

Catapulting them to international rock status with hits like ‘Hate To Say I Told You So’, ‘Main Offender’, ‘Supply And Demand’ and ‘Die’, ‘Alright!’ off of Your New Favourite Band (a compilation of songs from Barely Legal, VVV and the A.k.a I-D-I-O-T EP). The Hives made lovers of garage-rock sit up and take notice. Tyrannosaurus Hives gave birth to tracks ‘Walk Idiot Walk’, ‘Two-Timing Touch & Broken Bones’ and ‘A Little More For Little You'; and The Black and White Album shook the airwaves with its hit single ‘Tick Tick Boom’!

Knowing they still had so much awesomeness to share with the world, the 12-track compilation Lex Hives was released in 2012 on The Hives’ own label, Disques Hives. Lead single ‘Go Right Ahead’ moved the band into glam-punk territory and was met with rave reviews and huge airplay.
 
 

SKUNK ANANSIE

Reunited after an eight-year hiatus, Skunk Anansie have ‘come home’, says lead singer Skin. Along with band members Ace (guitar), Cass Lewis (bass) and Mark Richardson (drums), Skunk Anansie have rekindled the feeling and soul of their previous work to continue the distinctive and dynamic sound that has made them the award-winning music force they are today. Skunk Anansie will get feet stomping and crowds jumping with their versatile range of hits from multi-platinum albums Paranoid And Sunburnt (1995), Stoosh (1996) and Post Orgasmic Chill (1999). Fans will remember singles like ‘Brazen’ (Weep), ‘Hedonism’ (Just Because You Feel Good), ‘Weak’ and ‘Secretly’.

Newer music off their albums Wonderlustre (2010) and Black Traffic (2012) combines Skunk Anansie’s trademark raw rock riffs, deep funk, frenetic drum-work and lush vocals with more confidence and maturity. Singles ‘My Ugly Boy’, and the gothic, slow-burning ‘My Love Will Fall’ have reinforced their status as one of rock’s most innovative, passionate and soulful bands.

Boys Noize

Making music for over half his lifetime, Alex Ridha, well-known to the world of electronic music as Boys Noize, has graced some of the world’s biggest stages performing alongside huge industry names. An undying work ethic and motivation to take electronic music to the next level on a global scale, Boys Noize has remixed and produced the biggest names in the global music world such as Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Feist, Santigold, Scissor Sisters, Snoop Dogg and Skrillex and is known for his innovative sound.
 
 

Alt-J

Gwil Sainsbury, Joe Newman, Gus Unger-Hamilton, and Thom Green met during their student days at Leeds University. They formed Alt-J in 2007 and have since taken deeper strides into the high ranks of Britain’s indie culture. The quartet released their debut album ‘An Awesome Wave’ in May 2012 and triumphantly accepted the British Barclaycard Mercury Prize for their efforts. From Australia to Belgium, France, Ireland and the USA ‘An Awesome Wave’ has put Alt-J at the forefront of indie rock and with nominations at the Brit Awards 2013 for Best British Group, Best British Album and British Breakthrough, the band has only teased us with a sample of their true potential.

The original Holi Festival in India is a huge fun-filled celebration of music and dancing, uniquely characterized by throwing special coloured powder into the air (and at each other) to express freedom and the colour of everyday life. The festival concept has quickly gained popularity worldwide with colour festivals springing up in Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Hannover, the USA and Singapore. Now it’s South Africa’s turn to launch its own version of the festival. The colour festivals are all about bringing people together and celebrating the fun and colour of everyday life. To support and reinforce this ethos more strongly we have rebranded to WE ARE ONE Colour Festival and in making sure there is no ambiguity between the SA event and the Hindu festival that it’s based on, the world ‘Holi’ has been removed from the title.

The 2013 festival will be held at the iconic Cape Town City Hall. Event organizers Manuela and Allan Gray are thrilled with the new venue:

We are very excited. The event has grown significantly over the past 5 years and City Hall is the perfect space for the size and vibe of the expo. For the first time we can host all of the related events: the expo, art exhibition and concerts under one roof.

The Cape Tattoo Expo runs from Friday 25th January to Sunday 27th January. Doors open at 16h00 on Friday and at 11h00 on Saturday and Sunday. The annual Tattoo Expo art exhibition will open on Tuesday 22 January at the Cape City Hall. Themed Homeward Bound, this year`s exhibition will be celebrating the nautical roots of tattoo art. This multi-media exhibition is comprised of a series of works by celebrated South African tattoo and graphic artists. In addition, the 5th annual Cape Tattoo Expo is also pleased to present Message in a Bottle. This adjunct exhibition features custom designed wine labels from top local and international tattoo artists. The exhibition will also showcase the Levi`s Trucker jacket.

Tattoos used to be a sign of rebellion. A middle finger salute to the rest of the world. Outlaw bikers got tattoos. Sailors on leave in Singapore got tattoos. Lifers in the joint got tattoos. Now, your mother’s got a butterfly on her ankle and your kid’s sporting a tramp stamp. What happened? How did tattoos go from the renegade, readymade, carney cartoons inked as fast as possible to the art form they’ve become today? That transformation is the subject of the new documentary film, TATTOO NATION.

Directed by Erik Schwartz, TATTOO NATION tells how a few incarcerated but very talented Chicano artists changed the world of ink forever. It follows three tattoo pioneers, Charlie Cartwright, Jack Rudy and Freddy Negrete, and shows how a new, fine line style using detail and shading to achieve a remarkable realism revolutionized the world of ink.

Gaming is being introduced to the convention this year to offer attendees an interactive breakaway activity to enjoy between viewing the many talented local and international artists on show and other entertainment. There will be a variety of titles set up to cater for all tastes and ages, which have been supplied by EA SA (FIFA 13), Megarom (Just Dance 4 and Skylanders) and Xbox SA (Halo 4 and Forza Horizon). There will also be Rocksmith available for want-to-be rockstars to try out, with a really special prize for one lucky person. For those afraid of the real guitar, there will be crowd favourite (and its plastic guitar), Guitar Hero to allow you to throw your rock-star poses with. Some of the titles, along with additional prizes, will be up for grabs over the course of the weekend, and on top of that, Kalahari.com has also put up some vouchers for a few lucky winners. Other entertainment at the Cape Tattoo Expo includes a tattoo-themed putt putt course, burlesque dance acts, and more.

After a brutal winter of snow and rain falling from the skies like wooden stakes, the suave undead, aching for a social gathering befitting of their stature, are stirring in their lavish mausoleums. For the news has reached them like the scent of the young, beautiful and mortal: The clans shall congregate once more in a celebration for the Masked Vampyre Ball – 1819!

The master has sent for James to polish his most expensive Twoshoes for when the clock strikes 21:00 the precocious young vampires of the Imp-aler Orchestra under the conductorship of the Esteemed Lord Vlad the VI shall serenade the ballroom of the undead with symphonies of the great composer, Maoriginal. The non-blood relations that make the duo of Nôze, has also sent a missive confirming their attendance.

In Cloak Towne, the Nomadic Orchestra shall have even the most distinguished guest swinging like a rabid bat from the crystal chandeliers. In the old Transvaalania we have summoned Bram Stoker himself to read from his classic tome.

This event, dear reader, will be a opulent blue-blooded affair. Guests are reminded to make their preparations in due time as to not be caught off-guard, for the revelry shall be such, that daylight might sneak up upon the proceedings and vapourise the ill-equipped!

For the brave amongst us, throw a roll of the dice and partake in the game of chance. Receive a Kiss or get bitten by Santanico Pandemonium, primary Queen Vampyre, rescued by our brave team from the ruins of the Titty Twister.

Hematologists unite, for there will be blood.

For one evening your senses are overwhelmed by a smorgasbord of goats, tubas, clairvoyants, caravans, chickens, trumpets, violins, giant speakers, a farmer and his live pigs in attendance…and lots of vodka. Sound like fun?
