The short film titled “American Reflexxx”, filmed in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 2013, has ignited a fresh debate (when uploaded on 7 April 2015) with its ever-relevant ‘questions about gender stereotypes, mob mentality, and violence in America’ – and the world. The video offers a compelling insight into human behaviour, and is harvesting strong opinions from individuals all over.

In this technicoloured social experiment, director Alli Coates films performance artist Signe Pierce parading in stripper garb and wearing a mask along the popular ocean-side street in Myrtle Beach. The pair agreed not to communicate until the experiment was finished, but never expected the horror that would unfold in under an hour. ‘Whether it’s race or gender, or class or anything like that, we just had no intention going into this video about any of those things… It just inherently happened because that’s how real society works.'(Coates)

One thing is for certain, this short film made me feel. It made me feel angry, sad, disgusted, terrified, ashamed, helpless. The shot of her on the ground as a hoard of degenerates collectively cheer on and perpetuate her abuse by sharing to social media, was probably the most powerful thing I’ve seen in an incredibly long time. BRAVO!

This made me feel nauseous, and scared. People are terrifying. Reminds me of one time two guys followed me home from a liquor store, shouting homophobic things all the way. Then they knocked the phone out of my hands when I was trying to call the police and knocked me to the ground. It’s not safe out there. People are disgusting.

Going through the pages of 25 print magazines and our three digital issues to select the content has left us smiling, laughing, lingering and certainly remembering–and we have no doubt it’ll do the same for you!

Making use of our digital magazine features, we have been able to breathe new life to previous print content – and everything has truly come together, just how we always envisioned! Please take your time to go through this magazine (all at once or a little bit each day) as a lot of work went into producing every edition and every page, since we first launched in 2005. Superstar: It’s not about taking the easy route… In 1969, when adidas first launched the Superstar shoe, the meaning of ‘Superstar’ was clear-cut! Today, the word has been corrupted to the point of confusion. Inspiring creative courage, the adidas Originals Superstar Campaign is a provocative movement, one which aims to reclaim the word and meaning of ‘Superstar’. The campaign features four major adidas original Superstars – Rita Ora, David Beckham, Pharrell Williams and Damian Lillard – who brazenly share their perspective on what makes a superstar.

An icon on the streets, the adidas Originals Superstar shoe has forged its way through history. From its humble beginnings as highly technical performance footwear designed for basketball courts, to integrating into the hip-hop scene in the ’80s, to various innovations and collaborations – it has always maintained its integrity! In 2015 adidas Originals begins its homage to the shoe that started a movement… The Superstar Vintage Deluxe.

While the Superstar’s quintessential design has its roots in sportswear, the timeless silhouette has broken those boundaries and goes beyond the constant flux of fashion trends. The connections between skateboarding culture, hip-hop, fashion and prominent figures have been prevalent throughout the history of adidas Originals Superstar. Starting with Run-DMC’s endorsement deal with adidas in 1986, which included the track ‘My adidas’ on their bestselling Raising Hell LP. A tune that set the tone for future relationships in the entertainment industry.

And then in the late ’80s Mark Gonzales signed with adidas Skateboarding, a move that would legitimize the relationship between skate culture and adidas forever. In 2004, adidas Originals Superstar celebrated their 35th Anniversary with the #SS35 campaign, consisting of 35 collaborative shoes. The final product was the #35 model, which was handmade entirely from the most luxurious leather – right down to the shelltoe and even the outsole! The masterpiece was presented in a large white case, adorned with gold-plated hardware and a matching cleaning kit. The few reproductions of the shoe have become collectors’ items that initiated the inspiration for the following decade of sneaker culture.

Although adidas Originals Superstar has maintained its authenticity and class, the 21st century environment that we live in has altered the core meaning of what encompasses being a true superstar. Today, people regard ‘Stardom’ as being referred to by your first name, having fans who are interested in what you eat for breakfast, and how many ‘Likes’ or followers you have.

Fabrizia Degli Esposti, adidas Originals Brand Marketing and PR Specialist, speaks with conviction:

‘Social media has completely redefined the concepts of self-expression, originality and creativity and throughout 2015, the campaign will question the need for external validation and celebrity worship. The campaign is aimed at inspiring creative courage without the need for external validation, and makes it very clear that whether it’s 1969 or 2015, there is no short cut to being a Superstar.’

So, what does it mean to be a ‘Superstar’?

It’s not about having your name on a jersey, a flag, or the skin of a die-hard fan. It’s not about the number of views, likes or shares. It’s not about being seen in the front row seats at fashion week.

For David Beckham, ‘It’s not about trying to be the next big thing.’ Nor is it ‘about having your name on a flag or a jersey,’ says Damian Lillard.

When David Beckham began his career, all he wanted was to be the best football player he could be, and Pharrell had a compelling need to create music. Whilst these ‘Superstars’ have all had different creative journeys, their original motivations from when they started out remain intact. Neill Blomkamp’s new film Chappie, set to release on the 6th March 2015, stars a stellar local and international cast. The South African homegrown talent includes Sharlto Copley, Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er, and international stars include Hugh Jackman (sporting a mullet haircut) and Sigourney Weaver.

Chappie tells the story of

The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever. Youtube

Hang on… It seems that this sci-fi comedy fits into the impressive continuum of self-perpetuating movie robots – with specific reference to Short Circuit, 1986, and the robot #5.

After being struck by thunder, #5- originally designed as a military weapon, develops a mind of his own with human emotions and intelligence. Sound familiar?

At one small seed we believe in celebrating emerging creatives, and watching their seeds grow! This is why the 2014 AFDA Awards Ceremony in Cape Town, on the 27th November, peaked our interest.

AFDA (The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance) has

‘produced some of the top film-makers and actors in South Africa today and has made a significant contribution to developing a sustainable local entertainment industry’.

But, back to the young ‘seeds’… We were really impressed with the television and film productions that were honoured, but have decided to share with you the cream of the crop! The winning third year film production was Happy Earth Co! Sit back, relax, and enjoy their 12-minute masterpiece!

‘When you decide to stab someone in prison, you pick a basic area to aim for and then rely on your anger. One. Two. Three. Then you hand the knife to someone behind you who makes the knife disappear as the person you stabbed lies on the ground, bleeding out.’

Job ‘Joburg’ Gallie joined the 28s through such an act. An enemy of his from outside had come into jail and Joburg had not wanted to join the number until then. The problem was that no violent acts could be committed in prison without the go-ahead from the gangs. He went to the senior members to ‘look for work’. They provided him with a knife (handmade, of course), and he stabbed the man twice in the head and once in the back. Joburg was dating the man’s sister on the outside and her brother forbade her to see him, telling her that Joburg was no good. She broke up with him. Joburg vowed to get his revenge.

During the interview Paul asked Joburg what happened to the person he stabbed. His reply was:

We became good friends after that… I never got back with his sister though.
