Cherylin MacNeil successfully brought her South African-bred ‘melodramatic popular song’ project Dear Reader to Germany’s creative capital in 2010. Signed to Berlin-based label City Slang, she has not forgotten her Jozi-roots. On 2013’s Rivonia she takes a look at her home country’s history with a fresh, fervent and harsh eye — which, perhaps, is most competent when it’s gazing from a distance. Rivonia‘s historic slant, immersed in emotionally fused vocals and steady melodies, has of course sparked a desire to be seen live. After mastering a recent performance with grandiosely sinister Get Well Soon at the Berlin Festival, Dear Reader will be embarking on Rivonia Tour Part II in November and visit 13 German cities.

After being a part of the successful Italian rockabilly trio The Boppin Kids, and winning the Heineken Jammin’ Festival with The Horrible Porno Stuntmen, Mr. Sinister Kris left Italy in January, 2012, to chase the dream in Berlin. Once arrived he got involved with various music projects and is now, apart from doing solo stuff, playing with The Boomtown Three and The Offenders. His recent solo undertaking is a cover of Ricky Nelson‘s 1958 hit single ‘Lonesome Town’ which was inspired by his girlfriend’s love of the song. Along with a beautiful video shot by Simone Trotta in Berlin’s Viktoriapark, and sung in a voice that could just be the male equivalent to Janis Joplin‘s raspy serenades, this version becomes a heartfelt reminder of the past.

I Heart Sharks – ‘Neuzeit’

Comprised of ‘one English boy, one German boy and one lost (American) boy’ (facebook.com/iheartsharksmusic), the band’s mixed nationality is increasingly common in Berlin and epitomizes its musical spirit. Their accordingly mixed influences and use of different genres seamlessly work together as postpop, while further extending the ‘influence-pool’ and creating a growing new indie scene in Berlin. Here’s ‘Neuzeit’, a Berlin hit with a German chorus sung in an English accent.

Rotfront – ‘Eyns Tsvey’

Similar to I Heart Sharks, Rotfront is a music collective made up of different genres, nationalities and languages. Active since 2003, and founded by Yuriy Gurzhy, who is also known for being part of the DJ collective Russendisko, Rotfront bring together russian reggae, hungarian garage-rock, ska, klezmer and hip-hop to create a sweat-inducing frenzy they call ‘Emigrantski Raggamuffin’ (immigrant raggamuffin). They often refer to Berlin as the ‘emigrantski republic’, honouring the diversity of nationalities living in the city who fuse culture until it’s a unique feeling that represents the new status quo. Yet since they’re mainly about having fun, the eight-to-sometimes-15 band members are best seen live, but singing along to ‘eyns tsvey dance the night away’ should give you a good idea of what it’s all about.

The Frantic Flintstones – ‘Chasin’ Da Dragon’

Berlin is mainly known for its electronic club scene, but is also home to an unflinching, non-mainstream and 100%-devoted psychobilly scene. The Berlin-based Frantic Flintstones being one of the first to pursue the genre along with The Meteors and Demented Are Go, are a firm part of it. For psychos in Berlin, Wild at Heart and Bassy Cowboy Club are regular hosts of psychobilly bands. Here’s ‘Chasin’ Da Dragon’ from The Frantic Flintstones‘ 2012 album Freaked Out & Psyched Out.

Get Well Soon – ‘Roland, I feel You’

Konstantin Gropper, the man behind Get Well Soon, is called a ‘German Wunderkind’ by NME and has a fervour for doomful melodies. Dedicated to German Hollywood director Roland Emmerich, who Gropper shares a fascination for the end of the world with, ‘Roland, I feel You’ is full of drama, dreams and desperation. And as if the melody wasn’t entrancing enough, it is accompanied by a mesmerizing video directed by Phillip Kaessbohrer — which is, sadly, not a trailer for an upcoming movie, but nonetheless 7:12 minutes of otherworldly pleasure.

Robin Schulz – ‘Eines Tages’

Robin Schulz is not Berlin-based, yet ‘Eines Tages’ could not be a more appropriate example of the city’s sound. While its dreamy electro melody is typical of its tourist-drawing, day-and-night club scene, the song’s original vocals were in fact brought into existence in 1978’s East Berlin by Barbara Thalheim. Listening to ‘Eines Tages’ feels like entering a land of no limits, similar to feeling detached from a boundary-driven reality at a days-long club night in Berlin.

With a sound that touches so many genres it’s hard not to find a part you’ll love from this Detroit native. GRiZ continues to show his love of saxophones while still giving his audience what they want. Starting off tranquil before hitting its high; ‘Smash The Funk’ is a beautifully combined collection of sounds that get bodies moving. His album Mad Liberation is out now.

Heliotropes – ‘Quatro/Joy Unfolds’

Heliotropes – ‘Quatro/Joy Unfolds’

These Brooklyn belles should be applauded for keeping their heads on while making music that’s this rock ‘n’ roll. The sound stays neat, and never feels like four angry girls banging their instruments in an enclosed garage. ‘Quatro/Joy Unfolds’ delivers enough kick to satisfy any rocker without scaring off his double-vodka girlfriend.

Zo! – ‘Count To Five’ featuring Gwen Bunn

<img src="http://www.onesmallseed.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/zo.jpg" alt="" title="Zo! - 'Count to Five' feat.
The second single from Zo!’s ManMade album, delivers a sound that the radio loves. Whether sipping cocktails at some fancy-ass restaurant or smoking it up in your stylish new open plan apartment, it’s a sound that suits most situations without disappearing into the DJs set-list. When it comes to music, Zo! knows what sounds right and exactly how to deliver it.

Fort Romeau – ‘Jetée’

Fort Romeau – ‘Jetée’

In his latest release this Londoner delivers a single that reminds one of the ever-growing electronic sound right here on our own shores. Starting off slow, before adding the timeless element of a soft piano, he takes the song to a new level and ultimately turns it into something that will be remembered in an over-crowded electronic playlist. Day-drinking song: check!

Mayer Hawthorne – ‘Her Favorite Song’

Mayer Hawthorne – ‘Her Favorite Song’

Some songs are just sexier than others, and this track from Los Angeles artist, Mayor Hawthrone, falls right into that category. ‘Her Favourite Song’ contains all the elements needed to go from being a club hit to on the playlist for a ‘drinks-at-my-place’ kind of night. Definitely an artist to keep an eye out for, or to send to Pharrell Williams for his next mix.

Typewriters have found something useful besides collecting dust in museums. Artist Jeremy Mayer uses assembled typewriter parts to create swallows and as an added bonus the wings of the birds can actually move.
Turntables are often black and boxy, lending them an air of design predictability. Audiowood has challenged this notion with the Barky turntable. The music device is made from glass and a solid ash wooden platform with brass fitted to the spiked feet at the bottom of the machine. With a rustic feel, the vinyl player can easily be adapted to any home. The elegant contraption also features a high-quality Rega parts kit and comes in 115V or 230V versions. Audiowood creates 10 to 15 of these pieces every year, making Barky an exclusive purchase.

Instagram has cultivated an era of ‘selfies’ and the return of vintage, retro inspired photography. While users can tap into Instagram’s filters to edit their images into aged photographs, many people view their creations through the modern technology of cellphones, Facebook, Twitter, tablet devices, and so on. Projecto brings the retro feel to life. The nifty device is a matchbox-sized projector that projects your Instagram images. Connect your Instagram account to the Projecto website, and the Projecto whizzes will develop your photographs onto a 35mm film. The film will then be passed through a wheel that fits into the tiny projector. Both the projector and the film will be mailed to you, so you an share your images in a retro environment.

MINI Mexico has targeted women drivers in an ad campaign that warns the fairer sex of the dangers of applying makeup while driving. The automotive company began their awareness project by placing large airbags inside female restrooms in Mexico. Soap dispensers were rigged to carry the airbags, and when women stood next to them, the dispensers would burst open into an airbag, alarming the women. The airbags were printed with the MINI logo and a caption that read: ‘There’s a place for everything. Makeup or drive’. According to the company’s statistics, over 1 200 women are killed each year as a result of the way in which they multitask driving and beautifying. While the initiative draws attention to an undermined source of road accidents, many women have voiced concern over MINI’s gender-based approach in the making of the ad.

People live their lives on the move, and there is nothing more handy than being able to whip out a work station when the need arises. BOXED is a concept developed by Tyler Stoddard. The designer created a briefcase that can be transformed into multifunctional furniture. From one little box case, four different types of furniture can be created. The wooden briefcase can easily form a desk, a coffee table, two stools, and a lamp, providing the perfect workspace utilities. Each piece can then be disassembled and fit back neatly into the briefcase. BOXED also comes with a small pouch of ash tree seeds so that its new owner can replant and replenish the materials used to make the furniture. The project is designed to provide functional furniture and to educate people about the ash dieback — a disease that has been killing ash trees.
Durng the hot summer months one of the panels opens, allowing vistors to enter and exit from various points.

Mood rings were one of the rages of the 90s, entrancing wearers to believe that colour-changing rings could reflect their mood. While the rings had little scientific value or accuracy, Phyode has created a wristband that reads the mood of its owner. Wearable gadgets are becoming increasingly popular as fashion becomes more tech-savvy and tech becomes more fashionable. Phyode aim to create wearable devices that can provide a better quality of life. W/Me is a wellness tracker that can monitor your body’s autonomic nervous system, which acts as a subconscious control system for your body. The device then uses this physical data to categorise your mood as either passive, excitable, pessimistic or anxious.

Formed in 1993, Memphis garage punks Oblivians are now back with Desperation — a new album to be released on 7 June.
Here’s a song by ex-Harlem bassist Jose Boyer’s new band Las Rosas from their selftitled EP released January this year. ‘Black Cherry’ is carefree garage rock that’ll let the gentle rebel out in you.

Beck channelled his inner Taylor Swift expressing his dissatisfaction with someone special in his latest song ‘Defriended’. We don’t know who caused his heartache but we can thank them for inspiring his latest release. ‘Defriended’ brings some deep base lines and cheerful electro underneath bummed out lyrics.

If you haven’t heard of Suicideyear, you should. Normally after hearing Britney Spears’ name you can expect something outrageous, Suicideyear’s remix of her song ‘Everytime’ for this new single ‘Goodbye Florida (For Now)’, however, is outrageously good. Flowing piano melodies mixed with low key rap beats will take you on a journey to Florida and leave you begging for more when it’s over.

Throughout their time as industry giants, Coca Cola has always promoted the idea of sharing in their brand campaigns. Joining forces with Ogilvy, the famed beverage company has created a new way to enjoy a sip of Coke. The split can is a can that is connected by two parts, allowing Coca Cola lovers to twist off one half so that they are left with a can in one hand and a can-like cup in the other. It’s always easy to share a bottle of Coke with friends, and Coca Cola has taken this concept one step further by making cans a convenient way to share. The cans have swept through the streets of Singapore, but were not sold via vending machines or shops. Instead a ‘happiness truck’ handed the drinks out to passersby.

No matter where you are staying hydrated is an important way to keep healthy and look fresh. While most humidifiers are too bulky and inconvenient to carry around, South Korean design outfit Amazing Grace has created a portable humidifier that can be attached to any water bottle. Dubbed the Amazing Humidifier, the little device adjusts to fit on the mouthpiece of the water bottle. The system is powered by a laptop or phone charger using a USB-to-mini-USB cable, allowing the humidifier to suck water through its detachable filter, dispensing vapor at a rate of 30 ml per hour. In order to get a good night’s rest, a 500ml bottle of water will provide all the hydration you need. The nippy humidifier automatically turns off after eight hours so the machine won’t be overworked.

Colgate-Palmolive is attempting to make brushing a more enjoyable experience by creating a toothbrush that releases a chemical in the mouth when it’s being used. The company has filed a patent application that outlines the design of the toothbrush which has a patch on the back of the head storing toothpaste that is infused with flavourant chemicals. The new toothbrush will push Colgate-Palmolive to the front of the hygiene industry, while providing consumers with a sensory experience that excites an otherwise mundane activity. The patent has yet to be accepted, but Colgate has already begun exploring the flavours of mint, caffeine, and fruits as possible taste infusers for the toothbrushes.
After three years in the making, the innovative sports company has designed a product that uses integrated sensors to keep players updated on the skills. The mobile app provides immediate analysis, direct feedback, a series of challenges and a record book to motivate technique refinement and an all-round better developed skillset. The automated system acts as a virtual coach, allowing avid soccer fans to produce their best in their own time rather than relying on expensive trainers with busy schedules. If all goes according to plan, the ball will be released in 2014.

Most people love candy and Japanese design studio LIFE has found a way to give your sweet-tooth a fashionable outfit. Leather straps are attached to the spherical covers enabling them to perch on your belt. These cases will protect your sweets from roaming hands and keep you looking fresh.

Game Theory is well-known as a system of strategic decision-making, but Ithaca Audio has twisted this concept to create an audio visual mashup of famous songs, games, and movie clips. The piece was performed live using re-wired video game controllers. Ithaca Audio created Game Theory as a tribute to 35 years of video game music (Space Invaders, released in 1978, was the first game to feature a continuous soundtrack). The creatives took a walk back through time and delved into the video game music of the past and present to mashup this dizzying sound-movie display. They also incorporated some of their favourite current tunes to add some zest to the clip.
Ranging from Mount Kimbie‘s clubbanger ‘Made to Stray’ to Queens of the Stone Age‘s scratchy psych tune ‘Keep Your Eyes Peeled’, this playlist promises that a good time does’t have to be attached to genre.

The Lumerians are psych/space/kraut rockers influenced by African, South American as well as Turkish psychedelic treasures of the ’70s and share an interest for the occult — probably reasons for their out-of-this-world qualities. The five Oaklanders manage to create a sound that connects past and future unwoundedly and craft a listening experience that transports to a place certainly not found in this world. Here’s ‘Dogon Genesis’ from their new album with the oh-so-fitting title The High Frontier, we’ll see ya up there!
