Going through the pages of 25 print magazines and our three digital issues to select the content has left us smiling, laughing, lingering and certainly remembering–and we have no doubt it’ll do the same for you!

Making use of our digital magazine features, we have been able to breathe new life to previous print content – and everything has truly come together, just how we always envisioned! Please take your time to go through this magazine (all at once or a little bit each day) as a lot of work went into producing every edition and every page, since we first launched in 2005. Marilyn Manson, Johnny Depp and Ninja from Die Antwoord performed Manson’s ‘The Beautiful People’ song (from his 1996 album Antichrist Superstar) this Halloween at the legendary Roxy Theatre in LA.

This wasn’t a first for Depp – he has performed with Manson on and off since the 1990s. However, it was an unexpected surprise to have Ninja – who was introduced by Manson as

‘our extra special person from Africa. A wild country … with lions, tigers and bears

(nice one on the ‘country’ there, Manson. If you weren’t so smart, we’d take the piss. But we all know, that you know… there’s a shitload who wil!)

The footage, filmed by one of the fans in the crowd, has gone viral with over one million views in just two days.

M.I.A.: ‘Double Bubble Trouble’ | Pitbulls & Leopards Are The Shit Right Now

Two definite videos to talk about are currently making their rounds online. Die Antwoord just dropped ‘Pitbull Terrier’ (Emir Kusturica’s awesomely fun movie Black Cat, White Cat springs to mind immediately) and female rapper M.I.A. & The Partysquad released ‘Double Bubble Trouble’ on 19 May 2014 — maybe along a similar shit-stirring vein as the Zef rappers’ provocative style…

While Die Antwoord show us the the dirty world of cat and dog fights, M.I.A. alerts us to more specific issues when her self-directed video confronts us with challenging imagery such as flying neon-coloured drones, 3D-printed guns, burqas with a white-girl-smile print on them, kids posing for selfies as well as (less significant?) pitbulls and leopards. It was banned for a short while due to copyright reasons since its release two days ago but live again now, and viewers are fervently giving their two cents in Youtube’s comment section. Is M.I.A. a talented artist drawing attention to important issues? Or is she, as one of the comments states below, “siphoning off the culture of poor people”? What do you think? Based on the comments, I’m inclined to revise my earlier stated view to acknowledge that perhaps there’s more to this aesthetic than I’m aware of. Still not much of an MIA fan, especially her vampire-ish siphoning off and disposable use of imagery and culture from poor people and middle eastern and west asian people to give authenticity to her niche capitalist music commodities.

Ah yes cool but don’t forget that she grew up as a refugee in London and actually LIVED the culture you say she is “siphoning” off. Nothing vampirish about it, they are all part of her heritage and legitimate influences that inform her art. And all art is “commodity” whether you like it or not. Her engagement with hip-hop, music, fashion and politics is at least presenting a transparent vision of capitalist culture rather than asking people to be completely deluded by it. Being completely pejorative about entertainment and art isn’t going to get you anywhere, dude. The system swallows everyone up. Good talk. Hail Anarchy.

Lindiwe Suttle’s Kamikaze Art Takes Off in Germany

South African singer-songwriter Lindiwe Suttle has released her debut Kamikaze Art on 4 April 2014, and has received quite a bit of German press around her new relationship with German rock/pop star Marius Mueller-Westernhagen. Do you need a celebrity at your side to make it big? It probably helps, but Kamikaze Art nonetheless contains songs that manifest Lindiwe Suttle’s undoubted talent as a singer and songwriter.

Raised in the US but hailing from SA, Lindiwe Suttle is living up to her mother’s fame with her own skills and ambitions. She has an MBA in Entrepreneurship/Marketing, has styled Beyonce and Ciara, and – on top of that – is blessed with a beautiful singing voice. She is also a hard worker with a zest for social justice, and shines a different light on South Africa as opposed to, for example, zef shockers Die Antwoord. Her music career started with performances in small clubs in Cape Town but today she is a celebrity who has just internationally released her debut album. And, recently – to the resentment of some – news leaked that she is the new girlfriend of German music legend Marius Mueller-Westernhagen. Knowing the hurt that this might have caused to Romney Williams, the singer’s wife of 25 years, he told German tabloid Bild am Sonntag that sometimes you can’t help it when ‘the lightning bolt of love’ strikes.

But gossip aside and focus to the music, Kamikaze Art is a world-class album that was recorded and produced by Ivan Georgiev in Berlin but features themes that, although universal, appear closer to home. According to Lindiwe’s website, the album deals with political corruption, the internal struggle between good and bad, temptations of the music industry, bullying, and social justice. ‘I called the album Kamikaze Art because I feel I have given all of myself. I truly believe in the music, each song is deeply personal, open and honest,’ says Lindiwe. Whereas ‘Kamikaze Art’, the first single off the album, is a colourful tune with a hint of reggae and shows off South Africa in its music video, the second single ‘1000 Miles’ is a more soulful song about love. What’s more, some songs off the album have already got the attention of the right people in the industry. ‘Twilight’, for example, won the Grand Prize in Session 1 of the John Lennon songwriting competition and was a semi-finalist in the UK songwriting contest.

So, whatever the hearsay, Lindiwe Suttle is bringing her South African roots and musical knack to foreign shores and, even if some disapprove, has partnered with a German music legend, not only in her private life but also musically. Lindiwe will support her boyfriend on his upcoming album Alphatier and will tour Germany with him as a ‘guest singer’.

Die Antwoord: How Much is too Much?

Die Antwoord is back with an interesting video sure to turn some heads. Putting a new spin on the good girl meets bad boy saga, the video will shock and awe viewers into silence. Scantily clad dancers and aggressive lyrics make it very clear Cookie Thumper is not talking about your average Girl Scout cookies.

Although the video has been received with mixed reviews, there is one thing everyone can agree on, the shock factor. The controversial rap group delivered in jaw-dropping fashion to leave viewers excited, confused, inspired, and perhaps even slightly disgusted. Bandmate Ninja takes charge behind the camera, leaving wife Yo-Landi Vi$$er to take the lead in her first solo track. Ninja’s absence is hardly noticeable in light of Yo-landi’s barely-there bikini and steamy scenes with a toothless gangster.

The duo had a tough act to top following their previous video Fatty Boom Boom, but have they taken it too far? In less than 24 hours the video has received over 500,000 hits and created quite the buzz. We expect any product of this South African crew to be outrageous but this latest instalment has led some to wonder at what point does ‘creative genius’ become ‘attention-starved extremists?’ Both are entertaining if not unsettling, but ultimately it’s a blurred-jagged line. Another one of sSHADOWWORKSs’ very own, Joburg-based Jack Gorton, aka Phat Jack is one not to be missed or messed with. Nu jazz, downtempo and deep house are his staples, and alongside his events planning, his record store and his producing endeavors, Mr. Gorton does many lovely things, like returning to Chukkachurri to perform this Friday, as well as sitting down with one small seed to chat about it all…

So, who is Phat Jack? 3 words only!
Passionate, loyal and stubborn.

How did you get into music?
I have always been into music since I was really young, was into early hip-hop and real electro and breakdancing… all that stuff. When i was 14, I snuck out of my house and ended up at 4th World in Jeppe Street. Walking through those doors changed my life; listening to dj’s like G-force, Static P and Tim White. The first time I heard proper underground house, I was in love!

How did you choose your stage name?
I was in a hip hop group when I was in school called ‘The Original Evergreen’ now Die Antwoord. Phat was an anagram for Pretty Hot And Tasty… but mostly I’m a chunky dude!

How do you feel about returning to Chukkachurri?
Super stoked! I really enjoyed myself the last time, the crowd was amazing… I was a little all over the place as I had been dj’ing in Jozi 3 hours before I flew to CT and straight to Chukkachurri… but I really enjoy that kind of space. Small and intimate lets you take chances and experiment.

What do you think about the future of South African music? It seems like there’s so much being made and so much untapped talent. Are there any acts that you particularly see making it big?
Wow, so many local kids making great tunes! Cuebar, Mr Deep, Jullian Gomes etc…

What are you listening to right now?
Old classic 90’s house, Frank Ocean and ElectricGuest.

Who do you consider an influence on your music?
Not sure, there is such great music popping up all the time and i get inspired by all this creativity and new directions…

What about you and the non-electronic music?
I like good music; electronic or not!

Future projects you can fill us in on?
I throw a monthly party called The Warm Up, on roofttops in the Jozi CBD. We have international guests like Jimpster, Alton Miller, Charles Webster, Johnjon, Till Von Sein. It’s a lot of fun, with great music and great people.

A particular Cape Town film editor turned producer/dj has been steadily climbing the hierarchy of electronic music in South Africa. one small seed TV crew are chuffed to witness the rivalry amongst fellow Joburgers grow even bigger as they intake their humble pie with bit of Haezer.

Cape Town-based producer Haezer is steadily becoming a star of the local electronic scene while also making waves overseas, with his trash-electro swarming all over the internet and two top 30 Electro House Beatport singles to his name. He came to international recognition when his breakthrough single ‘Who The Fuck Is Haezer’ got popular and went on to be remixed by some of the biggest names in the business.

Haezer talks us through his upward spiral, from his early influences, through his previous career as a film editor by day and dj by night, to his current life as one of the city’s finest dance-music producers, headlining festivals alongside his idols. He also offers an insight into the current state of the South African electronic scene and music industry as well as how he and his contemporaries fit into it.

“The kids here are hungry the music needs to have substance to it.”

As Cape Town’s electronic music scene is growing and breaking out of its shell, Haezer is establishing himself as one of the leaders of the movement, touring the world promoting his music and the local scene that he represents.His latest 6-track EP, ‘The Wrong Kid Died’, is due for release in August, featuring collaborations with local vocalists such as Tumi Molekane from Tumi and The Volume, Francois van Coke and Hunter Kennedy, both formerly of Afriakaans rock legends Fokofpolisiekar, Evil Boy, known for his work with Die Antwoord, and Mike Zietsman of PH FAT. After returning from a tour of Europe Haezer is set to perform at Oppikoppi Music Festival and Grietfest later this year.
