Making use of our digital magazine features, we have been able to breathe new life to previous print content – and everything has truly come together, just how we always envisioned! Please take your time to go through this magazine (all at once or a little bit each day) as a lot of work went into producing every edition and every page, since we first launched in 2005. This can be a view of the world, a symbol of belonging, a manifestation of your passion, a memory of love – but most importantly – a true expression of self! The ‘protagonist’ of the best submission will win a professional shoot by tattoo devotee Luke Daniel – who we interviewed in the latest issue – as well as being featured in an upcoming editorial. You’ll also get a large-format print to take home!

The Brief

Submissions should be photos of yourself, taken by you or a friend, and – most importantly – they should show off your ink. We’d also like you tell us who the tattoo artist was, what country/city it was done in, when it was done and – of course – what the story behind it was! All the images will be featured in a submission gallery on Cult of Self and viewers can vote for the ink they want to see featured in the magazine. Once selected, a shoot will be arranged with the winner of the poll and photographer Luke Daniel, which will feature in an upcoming editorial. And to make things exciting for everyone, there’ll be a main prize for voters, the best story and, of course, the winner of the poll who will appear in an upcoming issue.

A closer look at Langa…

Langa is a photographic essay, centred around day-to-day life in one of South Africa’s oldest townships. A subtle investigation of an extreme socio-economic crisis, which affects the residents of Langa on a daily basis – the story of indefinite struggle and survival. An in-depth glimpse into ‘The Forgotten Township’ – largely abandoned by government, the skeleton of Langa is slowly decaying, as unemployment and crime increase and living conditions become more hopeless.

However, the heart of Langa still beats strong – with a sense of humanity and community that will rival any suburban area of Cape Town. Circumstances, which would undoubtedly cripple most leafy suburban residents, fail to break the core-spirit of Langa’s people. It’s this ‘keep on keeping on’ attitude that makes the men and women of Langa some of the strongest and resilient people in the country.
