The original Holi Festival in India is a huge fun-filled celebration of music and dancing, uniquely characterized by throwing special coloured powder into the air (and at each other) to express freedom and the colour of everyday life. The festival concept has quickly gained popularity worldwide with colour festivals springing up in Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Hannover, the USA and Singapore. Now it’s South Africa’s turn to launch its own HOLI ONE Colour Festival, with the first event kicking off in Cape Town on 2 March and then in Johannesburg on 6 April.

Adding to the spectacle of colour and celebration is the impressive line-up of the top electronic dance music DJs on the scene today. Kicking off the festivities at 12:00 will be Sadhu Sensi, with his eclectic mix of ethnic sounds, followed by DJ Mighty bringing an energetic fusion of house and jazz to the festival.

Richard The Third will be taking festivalgoers on a rollercoaster ride of the best modern bass music as he initiates the first throwing of the powder into the open sky at 14:00. From there after, countdowns will be made for the throwing of the powder on the hour, every hour until 22:00, creating the visual experience of a lifetime with the beautiful backdrop of Table Mountain and the grand Cape Town City Hall.

By this time, festivalgoers will be covered in powder and enjoying the celebration of life, love and colour. Next up on the line-up will be world music maestro, Ma’orginal followed by Kid Fonque with his otherworldly rhythm and sounds. Mathias Schwarz, better known as Super Flu, from Germany will bring an international sound to the festival with some crispy bass beats and smoking hot performance. Toby2Shoes then hits the decks bringing his bouncy set to the HOLI ONE Colour Festival before the chart topping GoodLuck take to the stage to watch the sun go down and the floodlights light up. As night falls, SAMA nominees, Mix n Blend and the master of drum ‘n’ bass, Niskerone, will be gracing the decks to bring the harder beats and a mash-up of musical genres as the floodlights hit the colour and everyone is celebrating the festival motto of ‘We Are All One’.

He’s been around the world. He’s made music. He’s made art. He’s been Plastikman. He’s been CircuitBreaker. He’s been UP!, F.U.S.E and Chrome. He’s been banned from the United States. He’s been busy, making 12 full length albums and 9 DJ mixes. He’s been voted Greatest DJ of All Time — 7 times. Richie Hawtin, by now, is probably very tired. Not tired enough however, to come to South Africa for this year’s CTEMF to hold some workshops, perform and teach us a few things about techno and his many endeavors therein. His minimal style is easy to get into, like a comfy pair of shoes, which is what you’ll need for his set at midnight on Friday. Don’t miss this; it’s bound to be unforgettable.

We arrived just in time for the psychedelic/dream hip-hop/chill wave duo Christian Tiger School’s set, who seem to be becoming more popular by each performance. Known to create tunes that are more of the beautifully composed and relaxed kind, they shook things up to a jump-around level by infusing some borrowed beats, such as ‘My Girls’ by Animal Collective, in between playing some of the tunes they are acclaimed for. The combination of selected Discotheque-fitting tunes and their own slow-groove melodies earned them a considerate amount of enthusiastic hand claps and we-want-more shouts.

Next up was DJ Invizable of Gazelle with a set that exuded a mysterious energy because of the performer’s renowned disguise, of which the most noteworthy element is his shielded face. His expressive stage theatrics and versatile sound repertoire had the Assembly’s spirits running high. Through playing tunes that were reminiscent of seventies disco vibes to more modern beat freakishness, he created a healthily energized club atmosphere. The drama culminated in him jumping over his DJ desk for the last song and hyping the crowd up even more with his keytar and iconic dance moves.

It was just the right amount of preparation for Niskerone’s aggressive drum ‘n bass rage that dictated party-goers to jump around as fast as they could. His mixes varied from ‘That G-string Track’ by Munich’s Schlachthofbronx to a gentler Bob Marley vibe that, however, quickly got stirred up and went back to being the riotous rough sound that the internationally known DJ is loved for. At one stage he suggested ‘let’s play something slow,’ which persuaded the crowd to get out their lighters. Yet the romance didn’t last for long, because that’s really not what Discotheque-goers leave the house for. So, back it went to the usual whirlwind of spinning bass-ey beats that got the audience’s hands and feet in the air.

This coming Friday – the 26^th October- is the night of Discotheque x Halloween at the Assembly featuring another killer line-up. Guns ‘n’ Lazers, Candice Heyns and Petite Noir will deliver musical tricks and treats. Completely infected by his energy and passion for bass, we caught up with Cape Town-based drum ’n bass DJ – Niskerone – to chat about his love for the music and the respect he has for other local DJ’s. Length: 08:00
 
Mark’s beats can really only be appreciated 100% when one sees him play live – which is why we headed to The Assembly and The Waiting Room to witness his d ‘n b up close.

From Cape Town to Jo’burg and London to Barcelona – Niskerone’s live sets move small and large crowds alike. The guy who started the now-famous It Came from the Jungle parties, Mark Stevens has shared the stage with top artists including David Guetta, Rusko, Boys Noize, Steve Aoki and many others.

All dreads and toothy-smiles, the driven, wonderfully bizarre individual behind this explosive initiative is Mark Stevens, better known to dancefloor aficionados as Niskerone. Starting out in 2004, Niskerone has been obscuring our minds with his innovative approach to D ‘n B, keeping The Underground alive from his elevated spot in Fiction.

It Came From The Jungle offers a frenzied mix of sounds.

From reggae to funk, to metal to electro, techno and house, to hip-hop… there’s pretty much a style of drum ‘n bass to suit everyone’s taste. (Niskerone)

It’s more like an approach: an electric approach to audio experimentation. High-energy jump-up D ‘n B resonates around the club, but just like the genre itself as a mishmash of elements, the night transforms and gets heavier later on.

The junglists march in two-by-two… to the bar and then the balcony to mingle with the who’s who, but the dancefloor offers a space where you can be whoever you want to be. And then someone different an hour later.

All in a noisy campaign to keep pushing the local drum ‘n bass scene, some of the names we should be giving thanks to on the dancefloor this Saturday are:  Niskerone, SFR, Hyphen, Rude One, Counterstrike, The MFU, Danja and Ant-Alias

Here’s to another five years of syncopating beats and letting the good times roll. Amen!
