The exclusive show featuring the new Plastikman album

EX is the eagerly anticipated new album from Plastikman – the project with which Richie Hawtin gained worldwide recognition in the 1990s. The album was recorded live at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and will be presented live worldwide exclusively at Sónar by Day with the special show “Objekt” on Thursday 12 June. The date at Sónar will be Plastikman’s only live show in the entire year 2014.

The Plastikman show (which extends the closing time at Sónar by Day on Thursday 12 until 11 pm) arrives in Barcelona with a special adaptation for SonarVillage, including a spectacular central LED obelisk. On the next day, Friday 13 June, Hawtin will be performing at Sónar once again – this time with one of his high-precision technological sets at SonarClub (Sónar by Night).

EX will be released digitally on 10 June and in physical format on 14 July, on MINUS/Mute. Mute is the label run by Daniel Miller, who will be responsible for the set that provides a prelude to Plastikman’s performance at Sónar by Day.

Listen to the EX preview here.

The Official Sónar 2014 App

The Sónar 2014 app is available now. The new application, available in three languages (Spanish, Catalan and English), allows you to check the line-up by day, time, stage and artist, for Sónar by Day, Sónar by Night and Sónar+D.

The options include MyAgenda, the customized calendar of favourite shows, synchronized with the diary created by the user at MailScanner has detected a possible fraud attempt from “mandrillapp.com” claiming to be www.sonar.es. To do this, you can access the list of the artists and mark them as favourites by clicking on the star: MyAgenda sorts them and gives an alarm 5, 10, 30 and 60 minutes before each show begins.

The application also includes interactive maps of the various stages at Sónar by Day and Sónar by Night in the Venues option, all the Sónar+D activities sorted by area (with a Networking Tool for accredited professionals only), the basic information about the festival (such as directions, how to get there and how to buy tickets, for example).

The App also includes two very special new features: the tracklist with the songs at the festival that can be listened to continuously at any time using Deezer; and the Augmented Reality function, which enables you to locate any festival space easily, as well as providing information about who is performing live at that time.

The application for Android and iPhone can now be downloaded via Google Play and App Store.

Yelle

Major premieres and essential shows at Sónar by Night

Hedonism, dancing, spectacle and the groove have been intrinsic elements of Sónar’s DNA since its first edition. And of course, they will once again be the protagonists of the festival line-up in 2014, focusing especially on the two days and the four stages at Sónar by Night.

Massive Attack have chosen Sónar Barcelona for the international premiere of their new show, which promises to be a further step forward in their audiovisual exploration of political propaganda and technological influence. Röyksopp & Robyn will combine their talents in a show for which the first international date will be Friday 13 June at Sónar by Night: the duo will be performing live their extensive repertoire of hits and tracks from their new EP Do it Again. Meanwhile,
the charismatic Lykke Li will be presenting her recent album I Never Learn at Sónar by Night, on which she shows that she is able to combine pop, soul and electronica with a great deal of talent. Yelle will also be arriving with a new album, which they will be performing live with a powerful and completely new show.

A special mention is warranted for Chic, the legendary band led by Nile Rodgers, whose contribution to funk and the disco tradition is essential for understanding and enjoying the present and future of music; and Richie Hawtin, probably the world’s most acclaimed dj, who is always one step ahead of the pack with his high-voltage technological sets, who will be playing the day after the premiere of the new Plastikman show.

Pretty Lights

Dancefloor benchmarks

This year, the festival welcomes several artists with an acknowledged capability to bring any dance floor to the boil, including Boys Noize, who expertly operate in the territory between techno, house and electro; 2manydjs, internationally acclaimed for their encyclopedic knowledge of the history of dance music and the genius highlighted in their sets; France’s Brodinski and Gesaffelstein, both at the frontline of international danceable techno: and Tiga, one of the most respected figures of the last 20 years and a dj with very experienced hands.

Sónar by Night also hosts several recent projects, including dance electronica, hip hop beats, dubstep breaks and British jungle: Flux Pavilion, Rudimental and I Am Legion, three British acts all with shows with pure energy on stage; Pretty Lights, perhaps the foremost producer in the new American cohort, with an impressive live show; and the rhythmic forcefulness of Camo & Krooked, whose sets redefine the power of drum’n’bass with a completely contemporary sound.

Global house

House and its many mutations will be lighting up the four Sónar by Night stages in their own right with some of their most important representatives: The Martinez Brothers, the most consolidated reality in New York house: from Norway, Todd Terje, the maestro of cosmic disco, with his recent It’s Album Time!; James Murphy, a specialist in
uncovering the genre’s hidden gems in bewitching sessions; the showcase by the legendary Leeds label 2020 Vision, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary with performances by Debukas, Paul Woolford (with a house set) and its founder, Ralph Lawson, one of Britain’s finest djs of all time. Daphni and James Holden will form an unprecedented and highly stimulating duo behind the decks; and Monki, star dj and presenter at BBC Radio 1, will be giving us a set with the best in bass music, new forms of techno and contemporary house.

Floyd Lavine has done a smashing job on this edit, and is sure to bring that quirky techno-house flavour that we know and love. So smooth, so immaculate, he’s added a deep and rich, much needed oomph to Dillon‘s soft and goosepimple-worthy vocals. Although the original is beautiful in its own right, it needed a beat that would elevate it to dance-floor status, and Mr Lavine has taken this track way beyond, fusing the structured styles of house and his own touches of mellow-y multi-layered goodness. Hopefully he’ll bless us with this one on Sunday 17 February at 22:00 because I for one would love to be on that dancefloor when this jam drops. Cha-cha, cha-cha…
The Pied Piper of the drum ‘n’ bass scene in South Africa. Surely, many of you remember your first time on Niskerone‘s dancefloor; when the following thought crossed your mind: I’ve never gotten this lost in sound! His influence on crowds at festivals and clubs alike is ridiculous… if you’ve seen the way audiences react first hand — as part of the mass or not — then you will know what it means to truly move a crowd with your music. In this mix, which is last year’s promo for the CTEMF, he takes some of those familiar radio-friendly tracks and turns them into irresistible DnB body-movers, fused with familiar favourites by the likes of Chase & Status and Rusko. Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo. What a joke. There is not a splinter of innocence in this man, also known as DJ Black Coffee… Not when you’re responsible for the throngs of people worldwide, young and old, rich and poor, black and white and otherwise who are tuned into his infectious and prolific style. Starting out with nothing but a computer and a mouse to produce his music, he McGyver-ed his way into producing some of the most culturally groundbreaking jams on the house scene to date with the quiet power of one who knows just what his listeners need, and adding live instruments as a final salute to his love for jazz. Bucie’s vocals are sleek, and her harmonisations on this one are a much appreciated touch. At 20:00 on Sunday 17 February, you can witness this man in action, just how we like our coffee — strong, black and hot.
New kids on the block, oddballs Christian Tiger School are such an audio delicacy. Where often one would find music of this style comparable to a cheese sandwich, Sebastian Zanasi and Luc Vermeer are the Camembert with cranberry coulis. On baby butter lettuce and rocket. On rye. With those recycled brown paper organic serviettes. Tasty, high quality stuff. Bringing a much loved future style à la Flying Lotus and Afta-1, they’ve taken ‘Divorce’ (which is extremely gorgeous music as it is) of Cape Town-based uber-talent Bateleur and turned it into a head-bobbing, soul-encompassing remix that raises the bar tenfold for local electronic music. Our Christine sat down with them for a short music lesson; find out what went down here, then make sure you catch them at 13:00 on Saturday the 16 February. Bon Appétit!
This track is gold. 10 points to you if you can figure out which Fugees song was also inspired by the original Flamingos track… With a lovely vocal covered by the oh-so-wonderful vocalist Martina Topley-Bird, this track is beautifully balanced; not too much and not too little — classy in the most easy of ways with understated beats and gorgeous bass. Most of his mixes have a gloomy vibe about them, which comes as a pleasant and down-to-earth breath of fresh air. All instruments are played by this multi-talented guy, who’s been gracing the Cape Town bass scene for some time now, at spots such as Cold Turkey and Fiction. He’s been CircuitBreaker. He’s been UP!, F.U.S.E and Chrome. He’s been banned from the United States. He’s been busy, making 12 full length albums and 9 DJ mixes. He’s been voted Greatest DJ of All Time — 7 times. Richie Hawtin, by now, is probably very tired. Not tired enough however, to come to South Africa for this year’s CTEMF to hold some workshops, perform and teach us a few things about techno and his many endeavors therein. His minimal style is easy to get into, like a comfy pair of shoes, which is what you’ll need for his set at midnight on Friday. Don’t miss this; it’s bound to be unforgettable.

For me the most important part about CTEMF was how professional the whole event was run. Truly a worldclass event that I believe will grow, and in future become the cornerstone of the Cape Town music calendar.

You need the time for the festival to grow – to morph. Numbers are not the most important thing.
Now one year on, the CTEMF proudly reopens its window onto the ever-growing world of South Africaʼs electronic music scene. Once again we reach back to the roots of how it all started and discover what continues to inspire. Who has progressed and why and who are the names to watch. Which global artists shape trends in South Africa and, more importantly, who are the South African artists that are shaping trends globally.

2013 sees CTEMF proudly welcoming its first International guest, non other than Richie Hawtin. As one of the initial role players in the global techno movement in early ’90s, he has continued to be a driving force both on and off stage, positioning him currently as number two artist in Resident Advisorʼs 2012 DJ poll.

Locally, CTEMF will once again present a selection of the absolute cream of the crop of our Electronic Music Scene. From scene originators and business leaders to the up & coming mavericks and industry revolutionaries. There is no other festival like it in South Africa. The CTEMF continues to strive for an inclusive view of the scene around it – Past, Present & Future. Once again you are invited to rearrange your sonic geography. Be A Part.

You have been putting out records for almost 20 years now. How do you stay relevant in such a fickle industry?
If I’m not making music, I still try to DJ or put out music on Ovum Recordings. It’s music that is full of integrity and music that has relevance, that will stand the test of time. That’s an important thing. It’s a fickle industry. I see a lot of my friends make a record and disappear, or a lot of people get involved in the scene and like where do they go? They just want to get into it for the limousines, magazines, and the blow jobs. That’s fine, but its just I got into for a completely different story.

The integrity that I have for myself for creating a style of music that I feel comfortable putting out. I don’t go to trends.

I just do my thing. From a techno DJ or a house DJ, I’m fortunate that a Louis Vega or a Richie Hawtin will play the same track that I do. That’s a cool feeling.

Do you ever feel an extra pressure to be known by the newer generations coming up?
I see it as an older guy as well when the new kids come along and they are getting the autographs. One, two people come up to me and fifteen people go up to them. My ego is like ‘Hey, What’s up?’. I’m a firm believer in quality over quantity. The right people know who I am, rather than everybody. I can walk around and still be Josh Wink. Just Josh. I treasure that. I treasure being in the media then not being in the media. I don’t feel horrible when I’m not in there. Sometimes I don’t want to be in there because I just like being normal. So it’s a nice balance that I have that I’ve tried to understand throughout my career.

What’s next for you?
I’m a new father of seven months so I’m really trying to understand the balance in life and how to be human again and be an individual rather than just being a parent. I’m really hoping to be inspired and make an opus from the love and inspiration for my son. I haven’t had a chance to be in the studio because I’ve been too busy doing father things. I really hope to do it soon. I started getting involved in getting the late night, after he goes to bed, go to the studio and work for three hours. If I’m not releasing the music, then we are still releasing really cool music on Ovum.

Fatherhood can be an amazing thing, or so I’m told from my friends.
It’s deep. It’s really scary how you can love something so much. Seriously. I say with conviction and sincerity. It’s really intense. I had no idea it would be like this. It’s awesome. The first three months are the hardest thing in the world. I’ve stayed up my whole life professionally. Nothing compared to the sleep deprivation of the beginning.

I felt like a terrorist being interrogated when they strip your ego by taking your sleep away.

That’s how we felt. It was hard and I took four months off to be a father and to be around and be proactive. I love the job and I’m a little bit older. I’m 42 so it’s an interesting thing as an older father as well too. I really hope to get in the studio and make music and be inspired and give something to my son to listen to. I brought him in the studio and hit play and he started crying. I think he was just in the studio, and it was warm, it was just a dead sound, then a sound suddenly came on. I was like ‘Oh no! I just started a new track and my son hates it!’. I look forward to the next step.
