If you like your instruments at their most extreme, their most invigorating and brazen, this band is most certainly for you. It’s been a while since I’ve heard such brave female vocals on such a choppy, textural track of noise-poppy goodness. Not since The Yeah Yeah Yeahs or even The Breeders. We’ve all seen those bands with female vocalists who just mumble and scream over experimental melodies and riffs thinking they’re so trendy and ominous. Not Buke & Gase‘s Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez. For two people who make their instruments at home (yes, they do) there is something incredibly smooth and uniform about the chaotic, broke down messy nature of it; oxymoronic-al, yes. Regardless, you’ll just want more.

Clemens Bächer, who twiddles the knobs as Cid Rim when not collaborating with fellow Austrian beatmaker Dorian Concept. Bächer’s a percussionist by trade who tutors and performs in the free jazz realm for a living, so it follows that his productions are heavy on rhythmic patterns that sound slightly off-kilter and disorienting.

The-powers-that-be have most definitely smiled upon South Africa and this time Cid Rim is next to grace our soil alongside The Clonious and Lehrl. Performing this week at The Waiting Room in Cape Town once again, this is another highly anticipated event that is not to be slept on.

The Strokes have a brand new track called ‘One Way Trigger’ which precedes their upcoming (and currently untitled) album. The band seems to be taking risks this time and stepping out of their typical pop-rock Strokes-ish sound, which hasn’t gone over too well with most fans, however we like a little daring in our musos. Julian’s falsetto on this is, er… interesting. Not what you’d expect from him at all, and while it’s up to you to decide whether this just takes some getting used to, the tinny sounds and very 80s synth they’re throwing in there have thrown me just a little bit as well. It’ll be interesting to see what else they’re going to surprise us with! Feel free to let us know what you think…

Rumour has it that this young man has been mesmerizing audiences across Cape Town for a while now, and upon slaying at Summer Sundaze — this past week’s latest answer to Cold Turkey — guitarist Keenan Ahrends at just 25 proves to be quite a talented bloke — probably one of Cape Town’s best. While the recording isn’t the greatest of qualities, it’s not difficult to hear that the dexterity, charm, soul and versatility displayed by Keenan is there and would be a dream to listen to live… Contributing every so often to the fantastic Cape Town Goema Orchestra, Tagore’s Jazz Bar, The Mahogany Room and other such jazz-orientated gatherings, keep an ear to the ground for this one and you just might get to see this dream come true.
Some tracks are made perfectly and should never ever have been messed with. Not by anyone. This track is one of them, a gorgeous joint by producer Shigeto. But then you have Elaquent, who seems to have the Midas touch when it comes to remixes. This new release is absolutely gold, with surprising stops and the typical Elaquent bass we love so much… we decided we’ll make allowances when it comes to tampering with originals. Enjoy!
