California-based illustrator and comic artist Dan Hipp is one of the name’s behind the graphic novel series titled Amazing Joy Buzzards, which was first published in January 2005 by Image Comics. Hipp also creates energetic and eye-catching images for comic labels like Real Simple, Wired, DC Comics, Image Comics and Random House.

When not working on professional assignments, and/or training to survive the zombie apocalypse, Hipp fills his blog with wonderfully colourful, in-your-face drawings of characters from comics, films, games and other avenues of popular culture.

His take on the characters are usually wacky and imaginative, including mash-ups and routine zombifications, and are often hilarious. Hipp employs large areas of bright (but almost monochromatic) colour, out of which smaller parts of contrasting colour shine out. He embellishes his linework with areas of darks or textures, cranking it all up with his great sense of comic exaggeration. His latest series of illustrations re-imagines some of science fiction’s most seminal movies — Star Wars, Tron and Alien — as iconic Tintin picture books.
